Biography

Henry Timberlake II was born in England.

His origins are not known for certain. Some sources indicate he was from Hampshire and b.c.1629, and some sources indicate he was from Southhampton. In addition, his death date is not clear. Some sources give the 1706 death date, but early sources indicate his widow sold land in Newport to her son-in-law in 1697.

Based on the fact that he was chosen a corporal in 1644, he would have been born about 1620.

Timberlake, *Henry, Newport 1644, then chos. corporal, rep. 1663; had fam. of wh. I kn. only Eliz. that m. 24 Dec. 1670, the third John Coggeshall. Perhaps it was his s. wh. was a soldier with the rank of ensign, under capt. William Turner at the Falls fight in Philip's war, by the scrupulous keeper of the muster roll call. Timberleggs.^[1]

Henry Timberlake of Newport R. I., was Corporal there 1644. By his wife Mary he had William, Henry, Joseph and John. He died before 1680, and his widow 10 Sept., 1705. It may be that he was the youngest son Henry, named in the will, the connection [p.23] shown with the Bromfield family indicating a connection with New England rather than with Virginia.^[2]

Henry Timberlake, Sr. and Mary had six children:

1. William Timberlake (1655–1678), m. Mary —— resided in Newport and Boston admitted freeman 1668 died 1678 left a daughter. Administration granted to widow Aug 25, 1685. There is a record of this William Timberlake in the minutes of the select man’s meeting in Boston on 12-27-1670. It reads like this, "Joseph Nash is fined twenty shillings for entertaining William Timberlegs, contrary to the towne order."

1. Mary Timberlake, b. 15 Sep 1673; m. Stephen Mumford, 30 Aug 1697, Rev. Saml Willard performed the service.

2. Elizabeth Timberlake, b. 2 Mar 1678, m. Jefferay S Thomas on 13 Dec 1699. He was born 1679, Portsmouth; d, 1761, Portsmouth.

2. Joseph Timberlake (1659–1718) resided at Portsmouth and Little Compton, Rhode Island; m. Mary Cory the widow of William Cory and child of Ralph Earle and Joan. He was a Cordwainer and died 22 Mar 1718.

4. Elizabeth Timberlake (1654–1704), m. John Coggeshall 24 Dec 1670. He was born 12 Feb 1650 and died 9 Nov 1706. He was the son of John Coggeshall and Elizabeth Baulstone. Elizabeth Timberlake and John Coggeshall had fourteen children:
