Biography

Mehetabel Tippet was the daughter of George Tippet, who died in 1691, in Westchester county, New York, and his wife, Mehitable (Betts) Tippet. Her father remembers in his Will both "Mehetabel wife of Joseph Hadley" and her brother, George. [1]

Mehetabel's first husband was Joseph Hadley of Fordham, Westchester County, New York. His Will #753, records his wife, Mehetabel and children Joseph and Mehetabel. Early Wills of Westchester County, page 393 also states that Joseph's widow [Mehetabel] married John Conkling of Yonkers. [2]

John Concklin(e) was born about 1663-65, probably in Flushing, Long Island, a son of John Conklin. By December 7, 1694, he had married Mehitabel Hadley, a widow of Joseph Hadley of Fordham, Westchester County, as on that date she, as "widow of Joseph Hadley and now ye wife of John Conkline of Yonkers," submitted the inventory of her deceased husband's estate. A memorandum with the inventory mentions two children "Joseph and Mehitable Hadley for whom John Conklin and Mehetabel his wife promise to care until of age." She was the daughter of George Tibbetts [sic] of Spuyten Duyvil Nech [Lower Yonkers] and his wife, Mehtabel, daughter of William Betts. She had married Hadley, a widower with two children, George and Mary, probably in 1691. She had two children by Hadley (Joseph and Mehitabel) as already mentioned. Hadley's two children by his first wife, Mary Richardson, were orphans under a guardian's care on 20 Nov. 1695. [3]

Researcher's Notes

Mehetable had married Joseph Hadley, before September 12, 1691, when George Tippet gave unto Haddly and "Hittabel" his wife (sister of George Tippet) one full equity of 100 acres of upland in Yonkers Plantation. Joseph Haddly and Hittable his wife, died convey 25 acres of the same unto Matthias Buckhous, and he conveyed the same to Frederick Phillips in January, 1694/95, who sold it to Jacobus Van Cortlandt, in 1699; "and further, whereas John Conklin and ye aforesaid Mehitable his wife, late ye wife of Joseph Haddly, being possesed of the remaining part, died on the 16th of March 1699, convey ye same to Jacobus Van Cortlandt."
