Wiley Tipton, son of Jonathan Tipton (ACF) and Keziah (Robertson) Sevier, was born about 1785 in the part of the Watauga Valley that was to become Washington County, Tennessee. He moved, along with his parents and siblings, to Yancy (then Buncombe ) County, North Carolina ca. 1798. Sources [2], [3]
Wiley Tipton married Anna McKinney ca. 1803 in Yancy County, North Carolina. U S and International Marriage Records Yates Publishing, U.S. and International Marriage Records,1560-1900 (Provo, UT, USA, Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2004),
The census information on the ages of Wiley and Anna is contradictory. Both the *[2}1810 US Census and *[3}1820 US Census list their ages as under 45, which is in keeping with dates of birth in the period 1785 to 1786. The *[4]1840 census gives Wiley's age as 70-80, which puts his date of birth between 1760 and 1770, a period that is way too early because Major Jonathan Tipton was only 20 in 1770. The *[5]1850 census data for Anna (which is in agreement with her 1840 census age bracket) puts her age at 74. That would make her 44 in 1820 and marginally likely to still be bearing children. The evidence explained is that the 1840 and 1850 census data pertaining to the ages of Wiley and Anna Tipton is in error.
The census records indicate that Wiley and Anna had 11 children, six boys and five girls. The Rev. S. J. D. Tipton, a great-grandson of Major Jonathan Tipton, lists the children of Wiley and Anna Tipton as Wiley, John, Jackson, Samuel, Joseph, Jonathan, Rosey, Sally, Cussau, Dosie, and Anna. The census records tend to confirm the names of the sons listed by Rev. Tipton but differs from the order of birth given by Rev. Tipton in that the first four children appear to have been girls. The ages of the sons of Wiley and Anna has been determined on the basis of 1850 census data and hopefully are within a year of the right dates of birth. The dates of birth of the daughters (except for Anna) were estimated using earlier, much coarser, census data. Consequently, not even the order of birth of the girls is certain. The birthdates of those daughters whose married names are known can be ascertained from the 1850 census. [5], [7]
Several of Wiley and Anna Tipton's sons were active in the Civil War and the indications are that two lost their lives in that conflict. [6], [7]
The Rev. Samuel Davis Tipton reported that "Wiley Tipton...was hit in a fight and died." The date of Wiley Tipton's death appears to have been between 1840 and 1850 because he appears in the 1840 census but not the 1850 census. His widow, Anna Tipton, is to be found living with a married daughter, Cassau Honeycutt, and her husband Uriah Honeycutt in the 1850 census. [4], [5], [6], [7]
The question is raised in the reference as to whether the fight was a personal one or a war. The date of Wiley's death and his age at that time lead one to conclude that, if he were killed in a fight, it was, most likely, a personal one. [6], [7]

Regarding your message below on Tipton-178, Since I was the one who last worked on this profile, I put the messy formatting. Yep, I confess! I did it. However, I found your public comment antagonistic and offensive because you belittled another person's hard work because of substandard clerical formatting skills. Comments such as yours makes me want to give up trying to contribute quality documented facts about our ancestors. After reading the guidelines for Styles and Standards for in-line citations and formatting (which I am not very good at) and not getting it, I did ask for help. I was told they are only guidelines and what is important is getting good information on WikiTree. Since this bothers you so much and this is a collaborative effort why not fix it instead of pointing out another's (mine) inadequacy?
