Robert Todd Sr. was born on 23 Apr 1697 in Armagh, Ireland to parents John Todd and Rose Cornell.

"John Todd who fled from Scotland (covenanter) came to Amtrin (sic), Ireland in 1679. He had two sons, Andrew and Robert, (1697-1775). They were born in Ireland and came to America in 1737 and settled in Pennsylvania. We shall leave the genealogy of Andrew for those interested in that branch. But we shall carry through the family tree of his brother Robert as he was the great-great-grandfather of Mary Todd, wife of Abraham Lincoln.

He married firstly, Jean Smith,[1][2] possibly Ann Jean Smith, in 1722 in County Down, Ireland. Children:

  1. John, [2]b. 1719 in County Armagh, Ireland. d. July 27, 1793, m Margaret Thompson (1736-1809). John was a famed Presbyterian minister and an original member of the Presbytery of Hanover.

Robert married secondly, Isabella Bodley, daughter of General Bodley. in 1725. [2][3] Children:

  9. Col. Andrew C.,[2] b. 1757 d. 1838. lived at Trappe, Montgomery, Pennsylvania., m. Hannah Boyer ( d. 1838)

They immigrated to America in 1729 and settled in Montgomery, Pennsylvania. Isabella died in 1739, so it is assumed that she also immigrated to America with Robert.

Robert died on 3 Apr 1775 in Trappe, Pennsylvania.[1] He is buried in the Providence Church graveyard.

Research Notes

The Book "Parker in America" mentions the Todds, briefly.[4]

John married Margaret Thompson (1736-1809). He became a famed Presbyterian minister and an original member of the Presbytery of Hanover.

Robert Todd son of John Todd and Isabella Parker

Married Isabella Hamilton FIRST they had the following children:

Eli, John, David, Elizabeth, William, Mary, Robert, Samuel?, Sarah Isabella, Levi & William he then married Isabelly Bodley they had the following children:

Andrew & Owen

This also accounts for the huge discrepency in death dates. First wife Isabella died in 1739 and second wife Isabella died in 1779.

I find listings for Isabella Bodley Hamilton as one person but the birthdates of the children and headstone readings support there being two wives both named Isabella. I hope this helps to clear up some mysteries in your tree and I hope that I finally have it correct! Thank you to the person who posted the headstones on www.tltodd.com and to the people who posted the Sons of the American Revolution who only list the children of Isabella Bodley under her father's service.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Robert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Robert:
