Biography

Mary Todd was born on 31 August 1848 in Hayton, Cumberland, England, United Kingdom. She was the daughter of John Todd and his 2nd wife: Bessie Ann Holliday. John and Bessie Ann and their children emigrated to Kentucky in the United States in the 1850's, living near the "Mary (Todd) Lincoln" clan, already established in America. Then they had moved to Pennsylvania to work the coal mines, and from there to Ft. Scott, Bourbon Co., Kansas.

Mary may have known William Henry Provence (aka "Province") from Kentucky as his parents were natives of that state or they may have met in Kansas. She married William Henry Provence (abt.1848-abt.1892) in 1869 in Bates County, Missouri, USA. Bates is next to Bourbon County, Kansas. [1]

Mary and William Henry Provence settled on a farm in Fort Scott, Bourbon County, Kansas, where her parents were already living. The couple had the following 5 known children, all in Bourbon County, Kansas, USA:[2]

  1. John Wesley Provence Sr., 1870–1951
  2. George Henry Provence, 1872–After 1880
  3. William Martin Provence, 1875–1954
  4. Daniel Edward Provence, 1876–1959
  5. Ida Provence, 1878–After 1880

On the 1880 US Census, Henry Provence was recorded as age 32, born in Illinois, married to Mary (Todd) Provence, age 31, born in England. His parents were said to have been natives of Kentucky. He and Mary were living with their 5 children (see above) on their farm in Blue Township, ED 27, Jackson County, Missouri, USA. Henry was called a "Farmer" but no value was made for his farm. [3]

Mary (Todd) Provence passed away at 32 years old on 25 May 1881 of undisclosed causes while visiting her parents in Fort Scott, Bourbon County, Kansas. She was buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Fort Scott, Bourbon County, Kansas, USA. She lies under a common gravestone with her parents. Her husband: William Henry Provence (abt.1848-abt.1892), died about 10 years later "on the Trail" in Western Kansas. No Find A Grave Memorial has been found for him. [4]
