Colonel Michael W. Totten, of Rock Hall, MD lost a courageous battle with cancer on August 9, 2003 at his home. He was 61.
Born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Major General James Willoughby Totten and Ruth Ellen Patton Totten, of South Hamilton, MA; the grandson of the late Colonel James Totten and Julia Walke Totten of Washington, DC; and grandson of the late General George S. Patton, Jr. and Beatrice Ayer Patton of South Hamilton, MA
Colonel Totten served his country well in peace and in war for a period of 30 years. His military decorations include two awards of the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, three awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two awards of the Joint Service Commendation Medal, three awards of the US Army Commendation Medal, the Central Intelligence Agency award of Exceptional Intelligence Collector, and the US Army Parachutist Badge.
Colonel Totten received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1963 from Williams College in Williamstown, MA; a Master of Arts Degree in Middle Eastern Studies in 1974 from The American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon; and a Master of Military Art and Science Degree in 1975 from the US army Command and General Staff College, Ft Leavenworth, KS. Colonel Totten was also a graduate of the US Army Artillery Officer Candidate School, the US Army Military Intelligence Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the US Army Command and General Staff College, the US Army War College, and the Defense Language Institute. Additionally, he had completed, and was a leader with, DOCC (The Disciples of Christ in Community) program at The University of the South, Sewanee.
Colonel Totten served at every level of the US Army from Artillery Battery Commander to the Chief of Staff of the Army’s Special Staff. He served with the 1st Infantry Division in the Republic of Vietnam; as a member of the US Army Special Staff in Operation Desert Storm; and as an observer in the Arab Republic of Yemen during a civil war. He commanded Battery B, 1st Battalion, 2nd Artillery, 8th Infantry Division; Military Detachment 1, 1st Infantry Division; the 6th Psychological Operations (PSOPS) Battalion (Airborne), 4th PSYOPS Brigade; and the US Army Special Security Group. Colonel Totten served as the Assistant Army Military Attaché in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and as the Senior Defense Attaché in Damascus, Syria.
Upon retirement, Colonel Totten settled in Rock Hall, MD. He served as a Trustee with the Lab School in Washington, DE, the St Patrick School of Carlisle, PA, and the Radcliffe Creek School of Chestertown, MD. He was the Registrar of St. Paul’s Parish, Kent County, Chestertown, MD; a Trustee of the Episcopal Church Foundation, a member of the Chestertown Rotary Club, and a Founding Partner of the Chesapeake Bay Internet Associates, an Internet Provider Service serving the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
Colonel Totten is survived by his wife, Alexandra Train Totten of Rock Hall, Maryland; three daughters, Juliet and Ellen Totten of Rock Hall, MD and Cecily Totten of Somerville, Massachusetts; a son, Charles Totten and his wife, Alison of Bozeman, Montana; a brother, James Totten of Hendersonville, Tennessee and a sister, Beatrice Britton, of South Hamilton, Massachusetts. He is also survived by his grandchildren William and Elizabeth Totten of Bozeman, Montana.
