  • Admitted to the bar 1824, practicing in Montgomery, AL
  • Southern Unionist. Opposed nullification. He later became an ardent secessionist, in staunch opposition to abolition.
  • Wife #1: Margaret Jane Campbell, who lived only a few days after the wedding in Alabama, after which he returned to Georgia
