Lucy was born in Herefordshire, England (see footnotes) and was the daughter of a farmer Richard Gurney and Ann Walwyn. 1.
Lucy was baptised on 10 March 1799 at St Bartholomew, Munsley, Herefordshire. Her parents were married on 20 April 1796 at St Bartholomew.
She married widower, George Townsend, Green Grocer, of Chelsea market at Old Church, St Pancras.
They had 2 sons born in their marriage, George Frederick John and William. William Townsend died shortly after birth.
After the death of husband George Townsend in August 1832, Lucy remarried in December that same year to Thomas George, a Carpenter, also of Chelsea Market and a widower. Witnesses to their marriage were John Baillie and Esther Stoneman. In the 1841 and 1851 census, Lucy, Thomas, James 'Edward' and 14 year old George Frederick J Townsend were living at Union Street, St George Hanover Square. They had also taken in a lodger Richard Stevens from Cornwall.
Only 2 children born to Lucy in her second marriage were sourced. Her son born in 1834, named James Edward George but known as Edward at the 1841 census and later as James. A daughter Lucy Isabella was born in February 1836. christened in March and died on April 1.
In the 1850's her son George Frederick emigrated to Australia where he married Mary Byrne. George and Mary left Australia in the 1860's and settled at Inch Clutha. Otago, New Zealand and ran several Inns.
Lucy and Thomas also emigrated to New Zealand arriving about 1868 1, settling at Inch Clutha.
Lucy George passed away in 1880 age 84 at Inch Clutha. Her death was registered at North Molyneux. At the time of her death her death certificate records Lucy George having 1 living child.1
She is buried at Balclutha Old Cemetery. Lucy's death was registered at North Molyneux in the October/December quarter.
Thomas George passed away in 1872 age 79 and was buried at Balclutha Old Cemetery.[1]
