Biography

Light was born about 1770. Light Townsend ... He passed away in 1851.

John Light Townsend was born in the Cheraw Dist. S.C. on land that was granted to his family prior to the American Revolution, the site of this plantation today now falls within the boundary of Marlboro Co., S.C. Light Townsend had these land grants in Liberty Co., Ga.:

  • 1806> 200acres> Grant book F-5, page 309
  • 1806> 200 acres> Grant book F-5, page 310
  • 1811> 150 acres> Grant book H-5, page 547
  • 1820> 200 acres> Grant book M-5, page 670
  • He also drew land in the 1821 Ga. Land Lottery in Monroe Co., Ga.,Lot 157, Sect. 10.

John Light Townsend made his way to Fl. from Liberty Co., Ga.,where he married Phoebe Carter shortly after the birth of his first child. He was living in Liberty Co., Ga. during his service in the War of 1812.Light Townsend is shown on the 1820 Liberty Co., Ga. census. He was among the earliest settlers in Florida, after the purchase of Fl. from Spain,in 1821. His first Florida home was in Jefferson Co. Fl. where he was granted land for his service in the War of 1812. He was a private in Captain John Winn's company of infantry, 2nd Georgia Reg. His name appears on a muster roll, Jan. 18 to Feb. 26, 1815, dated Riceborough,Ga, April 22, 1815, when he joined. He was discharged Feb. 26, 1815. His home was at Riceborough. On August 5, 1822 Light Townsend was appointed administrator of the estate of Mrs. Letty Carter, possibly mother of his wife, Phoebe Carter.

He and his wife, Phoebe Carter Townsend, lived at various times in several locations; Alachua Co. (where he was living when the Seven Year War with the Seminole Indians commenced). He was for a short while a member of his son-in-law's, Capt. Thomas C. Ellis' Company of the 1st Regiment Florida Mounted Militia. From August to December 1840 he was a member of the same regiment, but then mustered into the United States service under the command of Col. W.I. Bailey. He lived in Benton County and Hernando County where he and other members of his family with friends and neighbors formed a small community. At his death in 1851 he was living on his plantation about six miles from Brooksville.
