Research Notes

  • Charles’ Spouse and mother of his children
The original record for Charles’ Spouse: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Wild-403 is considered to most likely be incorrect, an error possibly introduced by importing data from Ancestry.com which suggests Flavilla Bocking is the daughter of William Wild.
Evidence and source records indicating Flavilla Bocking is the correct person (or the correct name):
  • The Birth Registration records held by the GRO for the children of Charles and Flavilla Townsend all carry their Mother’s Maiden name as BOCKING.
  • The 1881 Census for Charles and Flavilla’s household includes Mary BOCKING aged 15 of Abney, Derbyshire, sister-in-law to Charles ie. Flavilla’s sister
  • A marriage registration record exists for a marriage in the 4th Quarter of 1878 between Charles Townsend and Flavilla BOCKING in Sheffield; reference: 9C/600. The marriage takes place a year before the birth of their first child William Henry.
  • Christening record for Flavilla BOCKING: 11 December 1859, Hope, Derbyshire; parents: William and Hannah BOCKING[23]
  • A headstone in the Churchyard of St.Peters Church, Hope, Derbyshire carries inscriptions for William BOCKING, his wife Hannah (Morton), and daughter Adelaide - an additional inscription “reads Flavilla is interred at Eyam Church” - Eyam being the last known residence of Charles and Flavilla.[24]
  • The 1871 Census for the residence of William and Hannah Bocking in Foolow, Hope, Derbyshire includes children Flavilla (1860), Martha (1865), Mary Hannah (1866) - seen at Charles and Flavilla Townsend’s residence in 1881 as his sister-in-law, William H. (1869), and Adelaide (1871) - include in the family Graveyard inscription at St. Peter’s, Hope[25]
  • Although Flavilla’s children include the names William and Hannah (parents of BOCKING) there is no child name Elizabeth (mother of Flavilla Wild).
  • For information: William Bocking married Hannah Morton on 21 February 1854 in Hope, Derbyshire.
