Hannah Townsend was born in Boston on April 4, 1641 the daughter of William and Hannah (Penn) Townsend. Her siblings were Eliezer, Patience, Peter, Mary, James, Josiah, Deborah, Penn, and John. Peter James and Deborah (who married Nathaniel Thayer) and Penn were the only ones who lived long enough to be married.[1]
She married (1st) Thomas Hull in Boston on April 3, 1657. He died by August 10, 1670 in Boston.[1]
Her (2nd) marriage as the 3rd wife of Hope Allen. They were married after September 29, 1671 and before January 1672..Their 1st child, James Allen, was born September 6, 1672. They were man and wife for only about five years when he died in Boston between June 18 and July 21, 1677, again she was left a widow, and this time she was carrying a child not yet born; this child named "Hope was born June 18, 1677. Children were:[1]
No will has been found for Hope Allen, but the inventory, dated July 27, 1677 contained a very large house estimated at L450. The estate was totaled at L660, 10 s. which included "2 negroes a man & woman."[1]
Her (3rd) marriage occurred between August 1, 1677 and January 28, 1678/9 to Richard Knight of Boston, a shopkeeper. Jacob Allen, son of Hope sued his step mother, Hannah and her now husband Richard Knight saying he had not received the L60 that his father left him in his will. The verdict was for the plaintiff so Richard Knight was forced to mortgage the property in 1677 to provide Jacob Allen with his legacy. Richard Knight was alive as late as August 25, 1684. No children were born to this couple.[1]
Again she married to Lt. Richard Way who was her 4th husband. They were married at Boston on August 13, 1689. Richard died at Boston between January 2 and October 28, 1697, intestate, and the couple had no children.[1]
There is no recorded probate for Hannah (Townsend) Way in Suffolk, Middlesex or Essex Counties.[1]
