In 1814, she and John had sold the farm in Wayne County and moved to Hickory Flat, Benton County, Mississippi after passing through Huntsville, Alabama. On January 7, 1815, while John was away preaching and visiting friends and Anna was tending to a sick neighbor with baby Zerelda, their cabin was destroyed by fire and children Eli, age 6, and Elvira, age 2, perished in the fire. Jennie, age 4, and a young girl watching the children escaped. Anna was stricken with grief over the loss of her children in such a horrifying manner that she weakened and died in April of the same year.
