Research Notes

Of interest is the record of the baptism of an Elizabeth Townsend on 20 May 1596 in Foulsham, Norfolk with parents Henry and Margaret. Foulsham is about 20 miles north-northwest of Bracon-Ash. This may be why there was no record of Elizabeth's baptism in Bracon-Ash. During the inquisition for his grandfather's estate on 26 Apr 1555 in Norwich, Norfolk and on 11 Aug 1555 at Salop (now Shropshire) it was determined that Thomas of Bracon-Ash, Henry's father, was his heir and was "22 years of age and more" and was "seized of the Manors of Sutton, Swanson and Folsham in Folsham" which came to him via his mother, Lady Alice (Poppy) Townsend. A visit to his grandmother's former manor in Foulsham shortly before the birth of Elizabeth would explain her baptism there.

Deprecated Text

There has been some confusion between the families of Thomas Townsend of Lynn and the Townsends who came to Rhode Island and to Oyster Bay. This Henry is believed to be connected to Thomas of Lynn, and not to the Oyster Bay family.

The following had been the lede of the biography:

John Townsend of Oyster Bay, NY died in 1668 but was probably not born until about 1610. John's wife was Elizabeth but her maiden name is unknown. The origins of both of them are unknown. The Townsend Society of America would very much like to confirm who his father was but so far no candidate has been found.

Henry Townsend 1558-1625 is from the Norfolk, England family with totally different YDNA. ['unclear who is being referred to ... different than whose? ... but probably this is meant to be saying that the DNA is different from that of the Oyster Bay Townsends] This is the Thomas Townsend of Lynn line and that is who the Thomas in the will was. [sic -- this is not the profile of a Thomas Townsend at all] Brother Robert seems to have died with no further trace and sister Elizabeth is likewise not traced.
