John was born about 1752. He was the son of John Townsend and Elizabeth Reddish.
He was educated by Mr W. Jessop and entered Trinity College Dublin on 1 November 1770, aged 18. B.A. 1775. [1]
He was ordained Deacon on 23 April 1775, and Priest on 5 May 1776, both at Cork.
In 1776 he was Curate of Island, Ross, and from 1788 to 1791 he was Curate of Marmullane.
John married Martha Williams, daughter of Carre Williams, esq., of Ashgrove, county Cork, in 1788.

He died in 1793 and was buried at St Finbar's Cathedral, Cork on 13 April 1793. [2]
