Henry Newton was born in Randolph, Massachusetts, in 1833, the son of Thomas Townsend and Eliza Dyer.
He married 15 year old Susan Worcester Alden, daughter of Charles and Catherine, in 1853.[1] In 1860, he was a boot-maker living in Randolph with his wife Susan and 2 young sons.[2]
Newton was a 29 year old shoe cutter from East Randolph, Mass., when he enlisted to serve in the Civil War. He mustered in as a Private in Company C of the 38th Mass. Infantry on August 20, 1862. He was wounded at Snaggy Point at Red River, Louisiana, on April 13, 1864. He was taken prisoner during the Battle of Cedar Creek on October 19, 1864, and remained a prisoner of war for nearly 5 months before being paroled on February 15, 1865. He mustered out at Savannah, Georgia, on June 30, 1865.[3]
After the war, he returned to Randolph. In 1870, he and his wife had a family of 6 children. Newton, as well as his 2 eldest sons, Henry, age 15, and Charles, 13, worked at a boot-making factory.[4] After his first wife passed away, he remarried to Emma --------, and they were living in Elmira, New York, in 1880, with a 2 year old daughter Eva Frances.
He died at the Soldiers' Home in Chelsea, Massachusetts, in 1901[5] and is buried at the Forest Dale Cemetery in Malden, Mass.[6]
