Phebe was born in Barnard, Vermont, on 18 June 1801. Phebe was the sixth child of George Townsend and Polly Richmond. Phebe died in Rockford, Illinois, on 12 September 1882.[1]
Phebe Townsend married Hiram Blackmer (town marriage record spells his name Hynam) in Barnard, Vermont, on 4 March 1822.[2] They had eight children.
Some time before 1860, Hiram and Phoebe Blackmer moved to Rockford, Illinois, where their daughter Laurentia (Blackmer) Thompson was living.[1] The 1860 U.S. Census recorded Hiram and Phebe Blackmer, both age 58, in Rockford with Orlando C. Blackmer, 32, and Ellen A. Blackmer, 20. All were born in Vermont. Hiram was a "Commission Merchant" with $500 personal estate.[3] The 1870 U.S. Census recorded Hiram Blackmer, age 69 and born in Vermont, occupation huckster, and Phebe Blackmer, also age 69 and born in Vermont, in Rockford, with Matilda Peterson, age 13, a domestic servant born in Sweden. Matilda had not attended school within the year. Hiram had $1000 real estate and $2000 personal estate.[4]
