Biography

Daniel was born in 1796, the son of Thomas and Frances Stapleton (Gaddy) Townsend, in North Carolina where he was raised.

Daniel would marry twice in his life. First, in around 1815, he married Sarah "Sallie" Herring, the daughter of William Giles and Penelope (Williams) Herring, in Robeson, North Carolina, where they would settle and have the following children:

Elizabeth Ada (Townsend) Yelvington (1816–1862)

Mary Ann 'Polly' (Townsend) Pittman (1817–1867)

Horace William Townsend (circa 1820–1901)

Penelope "Penny" (Townsend) Floyd (circa 1820–1895)

William Berry Townsend (1825–1892)

Garrett Henry Townsend (1828–1905)

Calvin Coe Townsend Sr (1830–1889)

Caroline Townsend (1830–died young)

Elias L. Townsend (circa 1835–1916)

Wright Allen Townsend (circa 1835–1921)

Sometime around 1832, Daniel moved his family from North Carolina to Mississippi where their youngest two children were born. In around 1850 the family moved once again, this time to Bexar, Texas. Sarah died ther in the same year they arrived in Texas in 1850.

Four years later Daniel married the widow Martha (McGaugh) Waggoner, the daughter of Thomas and Catherine (Sumner) McGaugh, in Hopkins County, Texas. Daniel was a widower 11 years older than Martha with 9 children of his own, but the youngest was already 19 years of age when he married Martha. They signed a prenuptial agreement before they married that excluded each other's heirs from the other's pre-marriage property. Martha and Daniel would have no children of their own.

Martha lived 22 years married to Daniel. She died in 1876 at around 69 years of age. Daniel would live on until 1897, living to be over 100 years old. His body is buried in the Townsend Farmstead Cemetery in Cedar Valley, Travis County, Texas.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Daniel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Daniel:
