Biography

Disputed Information

Because she has been tied to a famous Puritan Great Migration family, she is being tracked by Wikitree's Puritan Great Migration project.

Please use comments or g2g to discuss her details. Thanks.

Some say the wife of Francis Griswold was the Mary, b. say 1630[1] daughter of Stephen Tracy and Tryphosa Lee. As discussed further (see "Marriage") Stephen and his wife did have a daughter, Mary, but she was single in 1655 when her father left a bequest to her. Anderson reports she was then "perhaps unm[arried]" and shows no marriage for her. Wikitree's Puritan Great Migration project goes with this conclusion, thus she is attached to Stephen and Tryphosa, but detached from Francis Griswold and his children.

Marriage

Some claim she was wife of Francis Griswold.[2] Still others claim Francis' wife was Mary, a daughter of Thomas Tracye.

Of Francis Griswold in 1939, Donald Lines Jacobus wrote, "The name of [Francis'] wife is unknown. The statement that he married Mary Tracy appears to have originated in "Fifty Puritan Ancestors," by E. T. Nash, 1902, but although often repeated since, no evidence has been adduced, and no Mary Tracy has been found who could have been his wife. Lieut. Thomas Tracy had no such daughter. Possibly the statement was due to a confusion of his wife with (his) daughter Mary Griswold who married a Tracy." [3]

Then in 2001: "The given name of [Francis'] wife, who came with him from Saybrook, was Sarah. Her surname has not been ascertained." [4]

The New London County Court records from 17 Sep 1672 show overseers of the estate of Widow Sarah Griswold being appointed. [5] The Griswold Family Association also accepts Francis' wife's name to be Sarah.

Tracy-3141 and Tracy-271 appear to represent the same person because: Mary (Tracy) Griswold was a construct of outdated notion that Francis Griswold had a wife, Mary Tracy. In the presentation of 3141, his wife was reported as dau. of Stephen and Tryphosa. The marriage was disconnected and now the profiles are ready to be merged

I am reviewing this profile as part of the Puritan Great Migration project work on Stephen Tracy and his family.

Do we have reliable sources to support that Stephen Tracy's daughter Mary Tracy became the wife of "Francis Griswold 12th?" ... And the mother of Sarah Milburn, b. c1662 at "Haddonfield, Burlington County, New Jersey?"

Much discussion about the claimed Griswold marriage in duplicate profile about Stephen Tracy's daughter, Mary, Tracy-271. c2018, the Mary's marriage to Griswold was disconnected.

The two Mary profiles will be set as unmerged matches, but the Griswold marriage on this profile should be cleaned up at the same time.

Thank you. --Gene

Stephen Tracy and Tryphosa Lee had a daughter named Mary; she was alive and single in 1655 when her father left a bequest to her. (Last record of her.)

The daughter Elizabeth (Griswold) Palmer appears to belong to another couple due to their ages being almost the same as hers. The Griswold Family shows Elizabeth as the daughter of a Francis Griswold who got a land grant in 1636 and was a proprietor at Charlestown, where it says he died in 1652. The Griswold family, England-America : Edward of Windsor, Connecticut, Matthew of Lyme, Connecticut, Michael of Wethersfield, Connecticut Volume 2, page 13

Perhaps her parents are Griswold-325 and Unknown-173019. The dates match up well.

Tracy-967 and Tracy-271 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same husband, similar dates, mothers need to be reconciled
