Biography

William Traill, 1st of Westness, was born about 1651,[1] son of James Traill of Westove and his wife Jean Cok.[2]

He married Barbara, eldest daughter of George Balfour of Pharay[3] (marriage contract 15 Nov 1679).[2] Their children were:[1]

  1. James Traill, b. 1680;[4] died young
  2. George Traill, 2nd of Westness, b. abt. 1681; married Margaret Ballenden
  3. William Traill, b. abt. 1682; married Isabel Fea
  4. James Traill, 1st of Woodwick, b. 1683;[5] married Margaret Traill but his children all died young
  5. Patrick Traill, b. 1690;[6] died without issue
  6. Marjorie Traill, b. 1691;[7] married Charles Stewart; their family emigrated to Virginia where he became Receiver General of Customs in British North America
  7. Isabel Traill, b. 1692;[8] married James Covingtrie, Surveyor of Customs at Caithness
  8. John Traill, b. 1694;[9] immigrated to America and became a prosperous merchant in Boston; married Mary Gale but died without children
  9. David Traill, b. abt. 1696

Trail-126 and Traill-230 appear to represent the same person because: Merging this into Traill-230 because multiple sources describe this line as “Traill” with two L’s. So merging in this direction will set the LNAB correctly.
