Biography

Daniel Trammell, Sr. was born in Stafford County, Virginia and is the son of John Trammell and Mary Hutt; and died September 10, 1777, in Union District, South Carolina. He married (1) Eleanor Burke before 1743 in Fairfax County, Virginia, daughter of John Burke and (unknown). She died about 1750 in Fairfax County, Virginia. He married (2) Elizabeth Farr Scott after 1750 in Virginia, daughter of William and Martha Scott.

Gottschalk gives little information about Daniel and his line because it was not part of her research project. She estimated his birth c. 1707 and said his wife was Elinor, probably Burke. They left Fairfax c. 1760-66 "or before". She noted that Daniel had a son named Phillip who died in South Carolina in 1806.

Gottschalk's estimate of c. 1707 for Daniel's birth is poor. A better estimate is c. 1715.

We now know Daniel moved to South Carolina and left a will in 1777 naming his children from two marriages. His second marriage may have come five or more years after the death of his first wife.

The will lists the children in two distinct groups, the first being his adult children by his first wife, the second consisting of young children by second wife Elizabeth Scott. It is common for wills to list the children in birth order and Daniel's will would appear to follow that custom but actually does not.

What follows are the children with some evidence for their birth years.

Children by Elizabeth Burke:

  1. John, b. c. 1738. In SC militia in 1759. No record of Rev. War service.
  2. Daniel Jr., b. c. 1740. In SC militia in 1759. No record of Rev. War service.
  3. Phillip, b. c. 1743. Got patent in 1765. Served. Filed a Rev. War damage claim.
  4. Betty, b. c. 1745, m. Jacob Hollingsworth. Estimate based on household configuration in 1790.
  5. Thomas, b. 1747, according to his pension application
  6. Samson, b. c. 1750. Served. Filed a Rev. War damage claim.
  7. Gerrard, b. c. 1750. Served. Filed a Rev. War damage claim. See GA, Greene records

Daniel moved to South Carolina 1755-1759 and remarried to Elizabeth Scott, perhaps around 1760. Children by Elizabeth Scott:

  1. Jesse, b. 1763, per 1850 census of Greenville, SC. No record of service.
  2. William, b. 1764, per census and bible record. Entered service at age 16.
  3. Benjamin, b. c. 1770? Greenville, SC census. Too young to serve.
  4. Isaac, b. c. 1770, per census of Union County, SC. Too young to serve.
  5. Frances, unmarried in 1777. Probably born 1759 or later.
  6. Ann, unmarried in 1777. Ditto.
  7. Elizabeth, unmarried in 1777. Ditto.

1739 - Daniel Trammell and John Burke are on an administration bond for Elizabeth Duncan, widow and administratrix of the estate of John Duncan, deceased.[1]

1741-1744 - Prince William County, Virginia: Witnessed the court record of John Trammell, Sr.[2]

26 Nov 1742 - Daniel Trammel of Prince William County receives a grant for 77 acres on Pimmets Run between Mr. Scott's line and Mr. Dorrel's on the south side of the run.[3] He does not hold the land long, selling to William Wright 20 Sep 1744.[4]

1742 - Fairfax County is created.

17 Mar 1746 - In the Fairfax County estate administration of John Bru, bond is signed by William Bru, Daniel Trammell, and Gerald Trammell.[5]

13 Jun 1748 - Dan'l Trammell is on Maj. Lawrence Washington's copy of polls in Fairfax County.[6]

11 Dec 1755 - Dan'l Trammell is on a list of voters in Fairfax County.[6]

Sometime prior to 1759 he moved from Fairfax County, Virginia, to what became the 96 District, South Carolina, and later known as Union District.[7] There he (and/or his son of the same name) accumulated large holdings of land over a number of years:[8]

4 Mar 1760 - Broad River, 200 acres. Berkley Co., v9:393
2 Apr 1762 - Colonel's Creek, 100 acres. Craven Co., v10:199
24 Nov 1767 - Branch of Broad River, 100 acres. Craven Co., v15:142
2 Apr 1773 - Broad River, 200 acres. v29:156
9 Sep 1774 - Wateree, 200 acres. Craven Co., v33 p375

16 Jul 1765 - He witnessed a court record of John Trammell, Jr in Fairfax County, Virginia.[9] (Is this a different Daniel?)

10 Sep 1777 - He writes his will in Charleston County, S.C., signing it with his mark, a capital T. Wife Elizabeth is named executrix and William Farr and Thomas Trammell are executors. Witnesses: John Sartol, John Peter Sartor, Garrard Trammell.[10] The date it was recorded is unknown but it was shortly afterward.

He died sometime the fall of 1777. The will names seven children (John, Daniel, Thomas, Betty Hollingsworth, Gerrard, Phillip, Sampson), his wife Elizabeth, then more children (Isaac, William, Benjamin, Jesse, Frances, Ann, Elizabeth). From this we see that the first group of children were by his first wife and all were grown and settled. They received a shilling apiece. The younger sons were given land on the Wateree River and the younger unmarried daughters were given two shares each of his personal estate. The naming order suggests the children were listed eldest to youngest, but this is incompatible with what is known of the births of a number of them.

31 Dec 1777 - The appraisal of Daniel's personal estate totaling £1571 is submitted.[11]

14 Mar 1778 - The accounts of Daniel Trammell are presented. He had cash on hand plus notes totaling £834. Signed by Eliza Trammell, Wm Farr?, Thomas Trammell.[12]
