SOUTHERN CROSS, VOLUME 5, ISSUE 40, 8 JANUARY 1898, PAGE 12 Almost on the eve of the New Year a marriage took place in the English Church here, the contracting parties being Mr E. H, Spencer, of South Hillend, and Miss Ethel Maud, eldest daughter of Mr Tressler, Limehills. The bridesmaids were the bride’s sister (Florence) and Miss J. Gibbs, and Mr J. Spencer acted as best man. The ceremony was performed by Archdeacon Stocker.[2]

SPENCER— At the Southland Hospital, on 31st May, 1904, Ethel, beloved wife of Ernest Henry Spencer, of Colac Bay; aged 26 years. Deeply regretted. The funeral will leave the Hospital at 11 o'clock a.m. on Thursday, 2nd June, for the Eastern Cemetery.[3]
