Susanna was born 26 Nov 1698 in Portsmouth, Rhode Island[1]. She was married to Peter Devol, Aug 4, 1726, in Portsmouth, Rhode Island[2] There is conflicting data for this marriage; the same source on one page (Portsmouth Marriages) states, "(Devol,) Peter, of Dartmouth, and Susanna Tripp, of Tiverton; m. by Joseph Browneil, Justice, Aug. 4, 1726." and on a different page states, "(Tripp,) Susannah, and Peter Devol; (int.) June18, 1726; m. June 18, 1726."[3] If their intentions and marriage were on the same day which was a month and a half before they were allegedly married in Portsmouth, were they married twice?
In 1644, Providence, Portsmouth, and Newport united for their common independence as the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, governed by an elected council and "president".
Newport County was constituted on June 22, 1703, as one of the two original counties of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. As originally established, Newport County consisted of four towns: Portsmouth, Newport, Jamestown, and New Shoreham (Block Island).
