Dear Phillip,
Sorry we did not get this particular site updated earlier. The David Tripp born 1823 and Holden Tripp born 1825, living Richland Township in Vinton County in 1850(this part of Washington Township, Jackson County, Ohio became incorporated into the newly formed Vinton County in 1850) were the sons of Rev. William Henry Augustus Tripp and Nancy A. [Roby] Tripp. William, who died before 1850, was a minister of the United Brethren Church and so far we have not found any specific connection between him and the Daniel Tripp family. Rev. William was a descendant of Isaac Dow Tripp mentioned in your letter.
You asked about DANIEL TRIPP- Here are about all the records we have found concerning him. He was first found as a head of household in the 1804 (only year he was enumerated in Canada) Canadian Census records living near Stanbrough P. Stancliff's family in the Associated Township of Hamilton, Northumberland County, Ontario, Upper Canada, this record would put Daniel over age 18 or 21 (exact age not stipulated). There was a Charles Tripp in the adjoining Percey Township with a family.
In 1797 Stanbrough P. Stancliff became one of the seven original proprietors of the present town of Cobourg, Hamilton Township, Northumberland County located on the north shore of Lake Ontario. Daniel Tripp and Mary/Polly Stancliff were evidently married while still in Canada and moved back to the United States with most of the others in Stanbrough's family as the War of 1812 loomed on the horizon. Stanbrough sold his properties in Cobourg, Canada by 1809 and sometime after that he moved to Ohio. David Tripp, son of Daniel and Polly [Stancliff] Tripp was born 1811, and states in census records that he was born in Ohio, older brother, Ruel, born 1805 in Ohio according to census, but that may be an error. There wasn't much of an established community in the Jackson/Athens area at that date, Athens County being established in 1805 and Jackson County in 1816.
Stanbrough was quoted as saying " I fought for my country in the Revolution and will not stay in Canada and fight against her". We have positive records of him in Elk Township, Athens County, Ohio as early as 1813, and he was probably there earlier. The first Census taken in Athens and Jackson Counties Ohio was in 1820. Stanbrough had died earlier in 1820, probably in Elk Township, and did not appear in that Census.
In 1820 DANIEL "TRIP OR TREP" was found in Elk Township Athens (now Vinton) County, Ohio along with John Winters, Elijah Throckmorton, and Nathan Loveless who were also sons-in-law of Stanbrough Stancliff. DANIEL TRIPP had in his family 2 males under 10, 1 male 10-16, and one male 26-45, 3 females under 10, 2 females 10-16, 1 female 16-26 and 1 female 26-45.
In 1820 The other Tripp in the area was JOSHUA TRIPP in Clinton Township, Jackson County, Ohio who had in his family 2 males under 10, 1 male 26-45 and 1 male over 45, 3 females under 10 and 1 female 26-45. Wish we knew which male was Joshua, the younger one perhaps with a parent living with his family, or the older male with a younger family in his household. The other question arises-Was Olive [Stancliff] Trip.in some way involved in this family? She was too young to be the female 26-45.
In 1986 we made a trip to the Jackson and Athens County Court Houses to gather records. In Jackson the Recording Clerk agreed to make copies of over twenty L&P Deeds for us that afternoon. We collected our copies later that day, but unfortunately only after we returned home did we discover that several deeds in Volume A had not been copied. It seems Volume A had been sent out to be rebound. A couple of these Deeds may have had vital information on the Tripp family. Efforts to secure them by mail at a later date were not successful. You might be interested in some of these records we did get. Jackson County was created in 1816 and the first Land and Property Volume A probably covered dates between that date and early 1820's. According to the Index, Volume A, page 33 showed an unidentified SALLY TRIPP selling land to Armstrong Drector (At this early date it might have told just where she came from). Volume A page 565 showed JOSHUA TRIPP selling land to DAVID PAINE (Who may have sold it to DANIEL TRIPP below.)
Volume B: Page 75 Jackson County Land Records, December 25,1826, DAVID PAINE and ABIGAIL his wife of Jackson County to DANIEL TRIPP of Jackson County for $200.00 land located Jackson County NW corner of NE 1/4 Section 25, Township 8, Range 18 (Washington Twp)Witnessed by: A. Miller and Samuel Paine
Note: Section 25, located in the South East portion of the Township, is where Daniel Duhadway, brother-in-law of Daniel and Polly Tripp, owned land, and the same section cited in the following deeds.
Volume B: Page 329 Jackson County Land Records, January 25, 1832. GARRETT SHRECK and ANNA his wife of Jackson County conveyed to DAVID TRIPP of Jackson County for $200.00, 7 and 21/100 Acres of land located Jackson County. NE 1/4 Section 25, Township 8, Range 18 (Washington Twp)Wit: Thomas D. Paine and Edward Buford.
Volume B: Page 330 Jackson County Land Records, Next Page after previous record- Date obscured, but must be after the March 13, 1832 marriage of David Tripp and Margaret Shriek. DAVID TRIPP and MARGARET his wife of Jackson County to JACOB WESTFALL of Jackson for $84.00, 7 and 21/100 Acres land located NE 1/4 Section 25, Township 8, Range 18 (Washington Twp). Wit: J. W. Leach and Isaac Grady (Sounds like a Mortgage Deed)
Somehow some of these transaction became confused and probably even more disrupted by the untimely death of DANIEL TRIPP in 1828. At any rate they culminated in Court proceedings. (See Book C, Page 208). All Court records found for DANIEL TRIPP were as follows
JACKSON COUNTY COURT OF COMMON PLEAS, EIGHTH CIRCUIT Book B, Page 3, October Term 1822, DANIEL TRIPP vs. ABRAHAM WILLBUR. On May 21, 1822 Daniel Tripp appeared saying that in November 1821 there was a dispute over the ownership of some hogs. Before an identification could be verified Abraham Wilbur slaughtered the hogs and identification was then impossible. Daniel Tripp took the hogs claiming that they were his. Daniel claimed that Wilbur knowingly taken his hogs.(They Were supposedly branded or marked in some way and allowed to roam free) There was not enough evidence to support Daniel Tripp and he was ordered to pay Wilbur $28.83 for the hogs. This upheld a previous judgment by a Justice of the Peace.
Book C, Page 200-203, April Term 1833, Jackson County Court of Common Pleas, Eighth Circuit, In Chancery. On April 5, 1832 JOHN JAMES declared that on the 1st of March 1828 for the sum of $338.00 he sold to DANIEL TRIPP a parcel of land in the SW ¼ of Section 34 Township 8, Range 18 (Washington Twp). Daniel Tripp agreed to make three payments plus interest over a period of years and delivered to John James a Mortgage Deed on the land. After the death of Daniel Tripp who died intestate, there has been no payment whatsoever on this agreement. John James asks that the land be sold to satisfy the debt. MARY TRIPP, relict of DANIEL TRIPP and Andrew McPheeters were cited as Administrators of the Estate. At this date children cited- Benjamin Tripp had not yet reached 21 years, and was included in the list of minor heirs (Probably age 18 this date). On Aug. 23, 1832 the Athens County Sheriff was instructed to summon Betsey Miller (Married daughter) to Court. At the September Term 1832 the Court ordered the heirs of DANIEL TRIPP to pay $440.03 to JOHN JAMES which represented the amount of the notes plus interest, and if this was not done the land to be sold at public auction. The monies to be applied to the debt and the remaining debt to stand and be paid from any assets to come to said heirs. Note:
Book C, Page 208, April Term 1833, Jackson County Court of Common Pleas, Eighth Circuit, In Chancery (This is an extremely complex record, in which GARRET SCRECK attempts to get a Deed and clear title on land of DANIEL TRIPP from the heirs of Daniel Tripp.) On June 2, 1832 Garret Schreck appeared in the Court and declared that on Mar. 1, 1828 DANIEL TRIPP in consideration of $200.00 agreed to make a deed to DANIEL DUHADAWAY for fifty acres of land in Jackson County. (This is the land that Daniel Tripp purchased for $200.00 in 1826, Jackson County L&P Book B, page 75) DANIEL DUHADAWAY paid the full sum of $200.00 to DANIEL TRIPP in what may have been a mortgage transaction. But Daniel Tripp had not made the deed over to Daniel Duhadaway before he died. (Administration granted on the Estate on July 3, 1828). On Jan.14, 1832 DANIEL DUHADAWAY assigned that Title Bond to DAVID TRIPP for $200.00. On Jan. 25, 1832 DAVID TRIPP assigned the Bond to GARRET SCHRECK for $200.00 according to this Court record. (These transactions evidently not all registered and put in the Land and Property records, but perhaps Schreck, who was soon to become David's father in law, put up the money, giving a mortgage to David in order to enable David to reclaim the land of his father, DANIEL TRIPP, decd. The Jackson County L&P Book B, page 329 transaction indicates that on this exact date it was Garret Schreck and Ann his wife who signed this land over to David Tripp) Garret Schreck seeks a Deed from the heirs of DANIEL TRIPP namely RUEL TRIPP (retarded), LUCINDA TRIPP and BENJAMIN TRIPP of full age, BETSEY TRIPP now married to Samuel M. Miller, SIBBLE TRIPP, ESTHER TRIPP and WILLIAM TRIPP all minors. The sheriff of Jackson County was directed to summon the above heirs, and DAVID TRIPP was now included, to appear at the next Court Term. A guardian ad litum was appointed for the minor children and for Ruel Tripp. The sheriff of Athens County delivered a summons to Betsey and Samuel Miller. Lucinda Tripp and David Tripp both answered the summons by agreeing with Garret Schreck. On April 2, 1833 ANDREW McPHEETERS one of the Administrators on the Estate of Daniel Tripp appeared and supported the evidence given by Schreck. The Guardian of minor children agreed with Schreck and Betsey and Samuel Miller never answered and were in default. It was ordered that a Deed be made giving ownership to Garret Schreck
Note: DAVID TRIPP son of DANIEL TRIPP married Mar. 13, 1832 MARGARET SCHRECK probable daughter Of Garret and Ann Schreck. This is supported by the fact that "Garritt" Schreck born 1780-1790 lived next to David and Margaret Tripp in the 1840 Illinois Census. DANIEL TRIPP was married to MARY/POLLY STANCLIFF daughter of Stanbrough. DANIEL DUHADAWAY was married to BETSY/ELIZABETH STANCLIFF daughter of Stanbrough, and ANDREW McPHEETER (administrator on Daniel Tripp's Estate) was married to HANNAH [STANCLIFF] LOVELESS daughter of Stanbrough. Note that Mary Tripp, termed the relict in April 1833 was no longer cited as an heir of Daniel, had she died by this date?
Book C, Page 268-270, April Term 1834, John Noel brought suit against DAVID TRIPP and GARRET SHRECH as surety, in an attempt to collect $26.22. This was an appeal of a judgment already made by a Justice of the Peace of Washington Township in which it was decided that David Tripp was not required to pay the debt. John Noel declared that on Jan.14, 1832 (the same date that Daniel Duhadaway signed the Title bond over to David Tripp above) David Tripp by an Article of Agreement promised to pay to DANIEL DUHADAWAY $26.22 with interest. He said that Daniel Duhadaway had endorsed the agreement over to him, John Noel. He repeatedly demanded payment and it has not been forthcoming.David Tripp and Garrett Shriek say that they abided by the agreement in every way. The Court agreed and upholding the Judgment of the Justice of the Peace indicated that the defendants were free to go, and to collect from John Noel the costs incurred.
THE ATHENS COUNTY COURT OF COMMON PLEAS Chancery Records Vol 5 pp. 254-260, September Term 1839, Joseph K. Will vs. William Hall Sr and HEIRS OF STANBROUGH P. STANCLIFF in an action designed to clear title on Lots #41 and #87 in McArthurtown. The following is a complete list of those heirs of Stanbrough P.Stancliff named TRIPP as they appear in this very lengthy Court record.. No ages are specified, hopefully these heirs are listed chronologically. All are children of the Stancliff sisters, Polly/Mary Stancliff and younger sister Olive Stancliff, who both married men named Tripp. One man proven to be DANIEL TRIPP and Olive's husband was probably WILLIAM TRIP perhaps the younger brother of Daniel. The heirs listed are as quoted here as cited in the document-"REUEL TRIP of Jackson Co.Ohio(termed in other records as an idiot), DAVID TRIP who's residence is unknown, BENJAMIN TRIPP of the State of Illinois, BETSY and SIBYL TRIP who's residence is unknown, LUCENA TRIP of Jackson Co.Ohio, and WILLIAM and ESTHER TRIPP whose residence is unknown, his (Stanbrough Stancliff's) grandchildren and heirs in right of their mother POLLY TRIPP, FORMERLY POLLY STANCLIFF who is also deceased; and also LAVINIA TRIPP of the State of Illinois, HANNA Y, JOHN, MARY, DANIEL and SILAS TRIPP whose residence is unknown and POLLY TRIPP (termed in other records as an idiot) of Athens County his grandchildren and heirs in right of their mother, OLIVE TRIPP, Formerly Olive Stancliff who is also deceased;"
Maybe some of these records will be of interest to you. We are interested in your research and would like to hear of your progress in sorting out this family. Please let us know of any "break throughs".
Sincerely,
Sherry and Bob Stancliff
