Biography

1776 Project
Robert Trotter Sr performed Patriotic Service in North Carolina in the American Revolution.

Robert Trotter Gender: Male Military Date: 10 Jun 1783 Military Place: Hillsborough, North Carolina, Paid 8 pounds specie. Signed B Sanders Lee.[1]

Note: Robert's Revolutionary War service may not have been for serving as a soldier. Based on available records, it is not possible to determine if Robert Trotter's Revolutionary War pay voucher was for military service as a soldier or for providing supplies to the army. These vouchers covered both. "The collection includes images of State Treasurer Revolutionary War Pay Vouchers issued in lieu of cash for military service or supplies furnished." [2] [3] In some cases, looking back to the corresponding NC Army Account book(s) can help determine which one it was. However, in Robert's case, unfortunately, this does not clarify things. Robert's corresponding entry is found in the NC Treasurer's and Comptroller's Papers, Army Accounts, Vol. IX, p. 113, folio 2 at the NC Archives. [4] However, the book, "North Carolina Research: Genealogy and Local History," by Helen Leary [5] breaks down each volume of these account books, noting which ones were specifically for pay to soldiers only. This is not the case for Vol. IX. Per correspondence with the NC Archives: "Leary states in the volume description if the volume only consists of payments made to soldiers. If there isn’t that specific description, then the accounts include payments made for both military service and civil service," that this is "unfortunately one of the limitations of this record group" and it would be hard to determine which type of service it was. [6]

While Robert was apparently born in Brunswick Co VA, he had made his way Orange Co, Hillsborough Dist NC sometime before 1783.[7]. He purchased land there on 2 Aug 1790 [8] and sold it 15 Dec 1795. [9]. On 15 Mar 1804, he purchased land on Little Rocky Creek in Pendleton Dist SC. [10] He and wife Susannah sold the land, which was a tributary of Rocky River (in present-day Anderson Co SC) shortly afterward on 19 Jul 1804. [11]. His estate records indicate he owned 200 acres on Shoal Creek, Saluda River at the time of his death. The land was sold after Susannah's death, sometime after 16 Jul 1827. [12]. Per a Pickens County topo map, Shoal Creek was not far from the Greenville County line, in what is now considered the Dacusville community.[13]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Robert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Robert:

Based on available records, it is not possible to determine if Robert Trotter was paid for military service as a soldier during the Revolutionary War or for providing supplies to the Army. The NC Revolutionary War Pay Vouchers covered both. In some cases, looking back to the corresponding NC Army Account book(s) can help determine which one it was. However, in Robert's case, unfortunately, this does not clarify things. Robert's corresponding entry is found in the NC Treasurer's and Comptroller's Papers, Army Accounts, Vol. IX, p. 113, folio 2 at the NC Archives. [2] However, the book, "North Carolina Research: Genealogy and Local History," by Helen Leary [3] breaks down each volume of these account books, noting which ones were specifically for pay to soldiers only. This is unfortunately not the case for Vol. IX. Per correspondence with the folks at the NC Archives: Leary states in the volume description if the volume only consists of payments made to soldiers. If there isn’t that specific description, then the accounts include payments made for both military service and civil service," that this is "unfortunately one of the limitations of this record group" and it would be hard to determine which type of service it was. In short - the voucher is not proof he served in the militia.

By the way, if a separate document could be found proving he was living in Orange Co, Hillsborough District NC in 1783 or before, then this voucher would qualify him for patriotic service in DAR or SAR. He purchased land there in 1790, but DAR requires separate proof of residence unless the source of service is a pension record. They won't allow the use of the voucher as proof he lived there at the time. Either a document from the same time, or something prior that would help prove he was there both before and afterward would suffice.

We have here a source for a payment voucher issued for an expense incurred during the American Revolution. We don't know whether this expense was military service or some other expense due to Robert Trotter. Either way, he was compensated for service or for some other outlay that had value, presumably to the benefit of the war effort. I see no indication from the sources presented that he served in the NC Militia, but the probability is high that he provided Patriotic Service to the war effort in North Carolina. I see no problem with crediting him with a 1776 sticker with the parameter "unit= Patriotic Service, North Carolina, American Revolution."

Word of caution: Not all of these pay vouchers were for military service. Some were given to civilians who donated to the war effort to be redeemed after the war. Some of my verified DAR patriots had patriotic service vs military service and had this same type of voucher. I have requested his record from the NC Treasurer's Army Account book to see if I can determine which type of service Robert had. The entry should correlate with the voucher. When I get it, I'll let you all know. Here's an example of one that's non-military. https://services.dar.org/Public/DAR_Research/search_adb/?action=full&p_id=A007127
