Biography

Aaron Trowbridge was the son of James Trowbridge and Mary "Molly" Dunning, born on March 25, 1765 in Wilton, Fairfield Co., Colony of Connecticut.[1]

He married Keziah Jacob, daughter of Richard Jacob and Thankful Kellogg, in 1871 in Sheffield, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts.[2][3]

Aaron was a soldier in the Revolution. He enlisted from Norwalk, Fairfield Co., Connecticut, and served in the militia under Col. Samuel Canfield at West Point in September 1781. Soon after that, he removed with other family members to Sheffield, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts. He enlisted in the army from that town in May, 1782, as a private in Capt. Joseph William's company, 3d Regiment, Massachusetts Line. He was transferred to Capt. Tisdale's company in the same regiment, and was discharged in November 1783. "During the period of his service he marched from West Point to Philadelphia to check the threats of certain disaffected troops or persons who under the pretext of demanding their arrears from Congress threatened and endangered the safety of the members." He was granted a pension in 1818.[2][3]

Aaron Trowbridge settled in Sheffield, Massachusetts after his marriage. He was chosen hogreeve at a town meeting held there 14 April 1789, and one of the surveyors of highways on the same date in the following year. In 1793, he moved with his family to Windsor, Vermont. About ten years later, he removed to Seneca County, New York, and settled in that part of the town of Junius which became the town of Galen. After the death of his wife, which occurred in the spring of 1830, he emigrated with one of his daughters to Michigan.[2]

He was a proprietor of a hotel in Windsor for a few years, but farming was the principal occupation of his life. He was well esteemed by his neighbors and was a Free Mason of high standing.[2]

Aaron and Keziah had 9 children - seven daughters and two sons.[2]
