Biography

[Marriage] License granted May 23d ___ Edom Shu__ Elizabeth Troxell. ___ on the 23 day of May 1831. James H. Scott. A true Copy attest Isaac Baker Clk. C.C.C. [page has been torn & repaired with tape] [McLean County, Illinois, Marriages, Volume A, page 1, FHL film #1401956]

Edom Shugart's own diary [transcription from Bruce Taylor]: "Friday June 11th: ... About five or six o'clock Betty Shugart commenced sinking and at about nine oclock she sank peacefully and quietly to rest having eight children to morn the loss of a kind and affectionate mother. ..."

Edom Shugart told us in the diary that their dead were laid to rest in an existing cemetery on the Spring Fork of Flat Creek, Pettis County, Missouri; 10 miles south of Georgetown and 30 miles north of Warsaw. Fitting this description is a cemetery now named Bethlehem Cemetery on Anderson School Road east of Highway 65. In April 2006, local resident Wayne Vaughn visited this cemetery for us. He said that there are numerous places in the old part with 7 or more field stones in a row. He also drove along the old wagon road and felt that there was a good camping area about 3 miles away on the bottom land as described in the diary.

Richard M. Troxel author of 'Troxel Trails and Tales', 1997 gives her birth "c1810." The date listed here in WikiTree is from a genealogy attached to the Transcription of the Shugart Diary by Bruce Taylor. It appears to be copied from a family Bible.
