Stephen Jr. was born in Middletown in 1775, the son of Stephen Tryon and Prudence Bailey. His birth date is, at present, undocumented. He and his sisters and brother were all baptized on the same day, July 8, 1781, which was also the same day that their parents Stephen Sr. and Prudence were admitted to full communion in the church at Middletown.[1]
An Abigail Tryon, apparently a widow with 1 male 10 - 15, 1 female 10 - 15 in the household, appears in the 1820 census in Vermont. This points to Stephen having died in Vermont up to about early 1820.[2] In fact, his tombstone records his death as occurring on 12 Apr 1820, and the census was enumerated in May.
Furthermore, the following appeared in the 29 Feb 1820 Woodstock Observer: "In Hartland, on the 12th inst. Capt Stephen Tryon, of Hartford, being at Taylor's tavern in a state of partial intoxication, he mistook, in the dark, the door which led out of the house for the cellar door, and falling down the stairs, broke his neck, and expried instantly."
Stephen Tryon married Abigail Walkley, with no marriage record found. Abigail Walkley fits the age profile of a wife for Stephen Jr., and that of the Abigail Tryon who appears in the household of son Stephen III in Vermont in 1850 census. This Abigail died in Vermont at the age of 94, and her death record gives her birthplace as Haddam, CT and her father's name as Walkly.
