Joseph was born in Roane County, West Virginia in 1895.[1][2][3] He served in World War I as a PFC in the infantry. He married Helen E. Hines, daughter of James M Hines and Ethel E Stringham, in Ashtabula on Dec 24, 1923. (Helen was born about 1903.)[4] By the time of the 1940 census Joseph was living separately from Helen. She listed herself as a widow, he listed himself as single.
