Biography

Lincoln was the child of Volney Tryon and Elvira Rathburn. He was born in Wood County, originally part of Virginia, soon after part of West Virginia. He married Sarah E. Smith in 1890 and they had six known children. Something happens to this family in 1904. The children are found living with others as boarder, foster child, or in a childen's home and his wife is in a home for destitute people in 1907 where she gives birth to their last child.

Research Notes

He is noted as Lincoln, Linc, and Elijah Lincoln Tryon.

In the 1910 census, Bertha and Frank are living in the Athens County Childrens Home [1]. Wife Sarah is an inmate at the Athens County Infirmary [2].

There are records of the Athens County Infirmary and Athens County Childrens Home [1] that include this family. Trustees of the Childrens Home include Frank Tryon #610, Alvira Tryon #611, Bertha Tryon #612, and Alda Tryon #613 (numbers are trustee number). Included are parents names, birth dates and places, when admitted, and with whom indentured or otherwise assigned. All were admitted June 24, 1904, from Lodi township. Wife Sarah was a trustee of the Infirmary. She was admitted February 5, 1907, from Trimble township, age 35, reason being destitute, and was noted as giving birth July 13, 1907, to a male child who would be Everett. Somehow William Phillip escaped this fate and is found living with others (see his profile).

An unsourced family tree on a genealogy site suggests he died 6 Mar 1945, Trimble, Athens, Ohio. We have not been able to verify this. Given what we know of his wife and children, one must assume he abandoned his children in 1904 or they were taken from him and then abandoned his wife or died by early 1907. His wife remarried about 1916. No records of him are found after the births of his children.

1880 census supports linking this man as son of Volney. -- Possibly his given name is Elijah.

Uncertain if this is connected at all:

"United States Veterans Administration Pension Payment Cards, 1907-1933," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2MK5-DD2 : 11 March 2018), Elijah Tryon, 1907-1933; citing NARA microfilm publication M850 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.); FHL microfilm 1,636,328.

If reported death 1945 is correct, that is another man's pension record.
