Research Questions
Two different birth places are listed in documents concerning Dempsey. Both his military records -- World War I and World War II draft registration documents -- give his birth place as Orbison in Hocking County. This is a small, unincorporated community, but it is very close geographically to the birth place listed in his marriage certificate of Buchtel, which sits astride the county boundaries between Athens Co., and Hocking Co.
Dempsey is listed in the 1930 census as having two daughters, Beatrice, born about 1915/1916 and Ella born about 1919. His wife's name is given as Emma. Stella Vess married Dempsey in 1918 and died in January of 1920, so it is clear that Ella is the daughter of Dempsey and Stella. But was Beatrice a daughter of Stella taken in by Dempsey, a daughter of Dempsey's mothered by Stella, or was she an illegitimate child of both, born about two years before they married?
