Birth

26 JUL 1709 Wethersfield, Hartford, Connecticut, USA[1]

Research Notes

James and Jane witnessed the marriage of his sister, Abigail, to John Ferris in a Quaker ceremony in New Milford in 1938. He was also the administrator of his father Ziba's estate in New Fairlield in 1754 [2].

His will is dated 7 Nov 1780 and he states he is weak and sickly. By the 13th he is dead and probate has begun with various people serving witness to the will and his state when when the will was signed. In his will he leaves the use of his estate and one third of his moveable estate to his wife, Jane. He gives 5 pounds each to his daughter-in-laws Abigail and Bethiah. "And all the rest and remainder of my estate I give and bequeath to my grandchildren to be divided equally between them, vis, Elijah and Elias, sons of Asahel my eldest son, deceased; and to James and Simeon, the sons of Simeon my youngest son, deceased; and to Anner daughter of said Asahel; to Jane the daughter of son Simeon." William G. Hubbell was the executor.

There is no record of a daughter Anne of Asahel.

Did James have a son named James. There are eight years between when Ziba was born in Wethersfield and Simeon was born in New Fairfield. In the church records of Sherman, CT, where we find all of the family after their move to New Fairfield [3] there is an entry "[Tyron ] Anna, d. James, bp. Oct. 19, 1758, v1 p5". This is very late for James and Jane to be having children (Jane would be 46). Also in this record we find "[Tyron] James, his orphan child Doritha, bp. Apr. 5, 1761, v1 p5". Did James have a son James who died about 1760? Did Asahel adopt Anne and that's why we see her in James's will?

"The Tryon Family in America" lists another son, Enos, born 22 Jan 1739. No evidence for Enos has been found.

The article in TAG by Gale Ion Harris "William of Hartford and Wethersfield Connecticut" states "James and Jane Tryon witnessed the marriage of Abigail Tryon at New Milford in 1738. James was administrator of his father's estate at New Fairfield in 1754"

James and Jane Tryon "drop out" of records after the birth of son Asael, which suggests they left the church they had been members of. Is it possible that they are the witnesses James Tryon and Jane Tryon at a marriage of Abiga[i]l Tryon to John Ferris in the Quaker Meeting that took place in New Milford, CT no date given? (The 1738 date apparently refers to the birth date of the groom.) Two other Tryon witnesses were Oliver Tryon and Ziba Tryon. Could the family have converted to the Society of Friends and that is the reason they don't appear in 'standard' Connecticut records?
