Biography

Jesse was born about 1763, son of Noah Tryon and an unknown mother. He married Jemima Goodrich and they had six children. He died in 1839.

Research Notes

"…from Glastenbury, Conn., 1783, settled near Timothy Allen's. He was a blacksmith and farmer, and acquired a handsome property. Some years before his death he removed to Granville, N.Y., where he died in 1839, aged 75. He raised a family of eight children: Jonathan, David, Jesse, Dennis, Mary, Sally, Penelope and Nancy. David removed to Texas; Jesse raised a large family and removed to Oregon. He married a daughter of Dr. Socrates Hotchkiss, of Wells. His son, Socrates H., became a physician; Sally married Samuel Smith, and removed to Burke, N.Y. Dennis is the only survivor of the family in this vicinity, and has been noted for his efforts to mine the precious metals on Haystack mountain."[1]

Children Dennis and Nancy have not been found in records so far. Dennis is supposed to be alive about 1867 based on the bio above. Haystack Mountain is about 2 miles north of Pawlet. Dennis is probably the 40-50 year old male in the household of Jemima Tryon in Pawlet in the 1840 census. The 1810 census has 8 people in addition to Jesse and wife so Dennis and Nancy are likely.

We find him in Granville, Washington county, NY in 1820 but not 1830. His son David lives there but Jesse is not with him.

His grave stone states "JESSE TRYON / died April 24 / 1839 / AE 75 Yrs & / 8 mo.

Who are his parents?

Jesse is said to have been born in Glastonbury and certainly married there to Jemima Goodrich who's family were residents. Records of the church in Glastonbury are missing for the period 1731-1768 but many other records have been used to document those living there during that period (see Tryon Families of Glastonbury, CT prior to 1790). Tryons living in Glastonbury at the time of Jesse's birth and of an age to be having children are Joseph Tryon, William Tryon, and Noah Tryon. William's children are fairly well documented and it appears unlikely Jesse is one of them. Joseph Tryon is also fairly well documented and no Jesse but it is possible. A more likely father may be Noah Tryon, uncle of Jesse's wife Jemima, who had sons <16 who are documented in the 1790 census and may have had older sons no longer living with him. Note also that Noah's sister Mary (Tryon) Hollister also lives in Pawlet during the same period as Jesse.

In 2023 a Y-DNA study of Tryon families was done using FTDNA's "Big Y" which not only analyses for about 700 STR mutations but also SNP mutations which are far more reliable genetic markers. A descendant of Jesse was among the 13 testers who were descendants of four of the six sons of William of Wethersfield. His haplogroup is R-FTE27603 which is also the haplogroup of another tester documented to be a descendant of William's son David. This eliminates Joseph Tryon and William Tryon as potential father's of Jesse. Noah Tryon is a grandson of David. Based on the combination of the earlier circumstantial evidence and this new genetic evidence we must conclude that Jesse is a son of Noah Tryon. See Tryon DNA Projects and Resources.

Checking and trying to get better handle on when son David was born -- there is no indication of a marriage for Jesse prior to Jemima, correct?
posted by Michael Maranda
Yes, the marriage record is solid, as is the birthplace and family of his wife, so Glastonbury is probably right for this Jesse's birthplace.

I believe what the Pawlett book is saying is that he came to Pawlett from Glastonbury in that year, 1783. Which is not to say that that data is necessarily correct. If the marriage data is correct, he'd have gone back to Glastonbury for the wedding 1786.

Do we have any evidence for his birth in Glastonbury? The Pawlet book gives his birth as 1783 in Glastonbury but the year is incorrect and may have came from the birth record of another Jesse Tryon who was from Glastonbury.
