Biography

Ansyl was born in or near Binghamton, NY. He shares the same given name as his father, though name order is often varied. Reported age varies considerably with birth year estimates from 1857-1866.

The family is found in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania by 1870. This is the first record we have for Ansyl. He is reported as 8 years of age, so a birth year closer to 1862 is likely.

Ansel appears in a directory in 1884 in Scranton, PA. His mother and sister are found there in 1880.

Ansel is probably in Lockport , NY in 1887.

We estimate a marriage of 1888 to Jane Stephenson, likely in Buffalo, NY, based on birth of child Edna.

There is a period of time where he is estranged from wife and children. He may be living under a different identity "Alexander" during this period, probably in NYC.

He returns to Buffalo, NY and resides with wife and family until she dies. Later we see him living with the families of his several daughters.

He dies in Williamsville, NY in 1943.

Brickwall Notes

I place the brickwall category and note here, and not on the two records linked as parents.

This ancestor is fairly well documented in terms of his wife Jane Stephenson and their children and descendants, but otherwise I have not been able to determine clearly his family of origin.

Even the order of his names is uncertain for me - Ansyl William or William Ansyl. He appears to have gone by the two names in different contexts.

For the mother - I am not certain of her first name. Mary, Anna or Roxy, or Roxanna. Her maiden name is only identified on this ancestor's death record and I am not confident of the data there. So her maiden name may or may not be Herrick. I have no other records to substantiate this.

The death record of this ancestor is attached. This is the only vital event document I have found.

Though the death record gives birth as 1866, and likewise the headstone gives same. Census records and a prison record indicate birth possibly as early as 1860.

As for the father: The death record of this ancestor indicates his name is also Ansel, but I am not 100% confident in this record as it was recorded by a non family member in a hospice like facility. Among the details which concern me in this document is the contention that the father is English and the mother Irish. I take it to more plausibly infer that they have that heritage than that they were born overseas.

I have found several contemporaneous Ansel Tryon's and have been trying to research them and document them as best I can so as to distinguish them from each other and to determine if one set of records is for one person or two. I have been documenting this in a note on the Space:Tryon_Family_Mysteries page - under "a tale of two or three Ansel's. I suppose however I should extend the net and include the possiblity that father's given name is Anson rather than Ansel. Also - it may have been a middle name used as proper name...

A related mystery: there are records for an Alexander William Tryon and a license to marry in 1906, NYC. That record is indexed at familysearch.org and indicates father of same name, mother of same maiden name, and same location and approximate birth year as this ancestor. That record may either be a sibling, or it may be an alias for this Ansyl who leaves his wife and children for a number of years. This is another family mystery, also documented on that page.

Which Name is First?

I have left two names in the "first name" category for now, as I don't know for certain, at birth which name was his first name and which his middle name. In his life I find the name order different at several times. He is however. buried under the order "Ansyl William Tryon."

As such, when searching for records I have done searches for both Ansel/Ansyl and William as the first name. Some records in Buffalo come up with William as the name used, perhaps this was for business purposes.

Another possible son revealed through genetic testing?

Genetic testing has shown a strong relationship between the known Descendants of Ansyl and the known descendants of Aloysius Charles Evers. Investigations into the genetic possibilities is ongoing, but to date the best explanation is that Ansyl was the biological father of Aloysius.

Aloysius was conceived before his mother Katherine Adams married William Aloyius Evers, who always represented himself as the father of Aloysius.

Location in 1880 is undetermined

Previously I viewed this 1880 record as a possible record for Ansyl (going as William). However, as there appears a William L Tryon in Middleburgh in 1892, it seems unlikely that these are the same person. William L Tryon Tryon-2245 is the son of Amos and Lucinda.

These should be for William son of Amos:

  • "United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MZF5-3JT : 20 August 2017), William Tryon in entry for Henry Bust, 1880; citing enumeration district ED 189, sheet 203C, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d), roll 0931; FHL microfilm 1,254,931.

However- is this 1880 record for the same William L?

  • "United States Census, 1880," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MZF5-3JT : 20 August 2017), William Tryon in entry for Henry Bust, 1880; citing enumeration district ED 189, sheet 203C, NARA microfilm publication T9 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d), roll 0931; FHL microfilm 1,254,931.

I leave Ansyl's 1880 location as an open question. His mother and sister are in Scranton, PA in 1880 (need to find source for that again!). At some point he heads from PA to NYS, winding up in Buffalo where he marries and has children and dies.

In the 1886 Scranton, PA directory there is a directory entry for Ansely Tryon, laborer, living at 506 Prospect avenue. No Tryons in the 1887 or 1888 Scranton directories.

This is likely Ansyl, either still in Scranton or temporarily returned there. He is likely in Buffalo, NY and married around 1888.

Marriage

I have not found a marriage record. if it is the case that he was not raised Roman Catholic, which is my assumption based on where his mother was reportedly buried, Ansyl would not have been married in the Catholic church unless there was some dispensation or a conversion.

Marriage date is derived from the report on the 1900 census and in terms of timing of the birth of the eldest child.

Marriage:
Date: 1888[22]

I don't think the "divorce and remarriage" is likely between Jennie and Ansyl. Charges of abandonment don't make as much sense in that context, depending on timing. I also got the impression from the record that they might have thought he was dead when he was gone, or at least that it was more acceptable to be regarded as widow than the shame of abandonment. Not to mention I don't think Jennie would have considered divorce an option (Catholicism) ... Relatedly, I don't think Ansyl's background was Catholic though his wife and children were, and I believe he died in a Catholic institution.I don't know if they had a religious wedding, or a civil ceremony.

Yes, that 1892 is correct for him. These are his wife and 2 of his children.
