Research Notes

From The Tryon Family in America by Wes Tryon (accessed 24 Sep 2015):

DAVID TRYON 2.1b, second son of William Tryon 1.1 and Mary (Steele) Tryon, was born at Wethersfield, Conn., in 1672 or 1673. On Aug. 25, 1698, at Wethersfield, he married Hannah Waddams (another source spells it Wadhams), a daughter of John and Hannah Waddams, of Wethersfield, by John Clinton, J. P. She was born in 1680. David resided in Wethersfield until 1719, resided in Middletown from 1721 until 1723. In September 1725, he was living in Glastonbury. He was a ship builder, and died at Wethersfield before Dec. 23, 1730. According to Rev. Alonzo B. Chapin, published in 1853 in Glastonbury, Conn.: "David gave land to his 3 sons, David, Noah, and Ezra." The recorded children of David and Hannah were:
Hannah 3.2a, David 3.2b, John 3.2c, Jonathan 3.2d, Susannah 3.2e, Joanna 3.2f, Noah 3.2g, Benjamin 3.2h, Ezra 3.2i, Charles 3.2j. [1]

Early Connecticut wills show that David's will filed Dec. 23, 1730, and lists his wife Hannah and son Jonathan as administrators. A digest of probate records[5] states: "Tryon, David, Glastonbury, Wethersfield. Invt. 45-16-10. Taken 23 December, 1730, by Samuel Boardman of Middletown and Benjamin Rose of Glastonbury. Court Recore, Page 35 - 5 January, 1730-1: Adms. Granted to Hannah Tryon, the widow. Page 108 - 5 March 1733-4: Benjamin Tryon, a minor, 18 years of age, son of David Tryon, chose Ebenezer Dickinson of Wethersfield to be his guardian. Recog., 100. Page 3 (Vol. XII) 25 April, 1734: Ezra Tryon of Wethersfield, age 14 years, son of David Tryon, chose his brother Jonathan Tryon to be his guardian. Allowed. Recog. 100."

The above court record is also found in Waddams Genealogy, p. 29 (ref. below). It also lists the same children of David and Hannah as in TFA but without Charles.

Note on sons John and Jonathan: John is a shortened version of Johannes, not Jonathan. While rare today, having sons of both names was not uncommon at their time.

This quote from TFA: "Early Connecticut wills show that David's widow Hannah will filed Dec. 23, 1730 lists sons Benjamin, 18 years; Ezra, 14 years; and Charles, with Jonathan as guardian of his brothers." I cannot find a document titled Early Connecticut Wills. It looks like the information came from the Manwaring digest (citation 5) but there is no mention of Charles in that document.

Checking further, I find a hitherto unknown daughter, Sarah Tryon, not mentioned in TFA. She is recorded as Sarah, child of David, bp. April 23, 1699 in Wethersfield. She may (or may not) be the Sarah Tryon who married William Strickland -- yet to be determined. Next to her entry in the Wethersfield church records is a different Sarah Tryon, administered communion November 3, 1695. She is probably Sarah 2.1c, daughter of William and sister of David.

Checking the administration of David's estate and Glastonbury church records, I can find NO mention of two supposed sons: Josiah Tryon and Charles Tryon. Josiah is not mentioned even in the TFA and probably belongs to another branch of the Tryons. The digest of probate matters shows only sons Benjamin and Ezra as minors choosing guardians, and it is dated April 1733/4, suggesting their mother died in the spring of 1734. They did not choose guardians at the time of their father's death. However, it is only a digest, and the actual records need to be consulted to see whether Charles is in them and just didn't make it onto the digest.
