Elisha was born in Middletown in 1757, the son of David Tryon and Sarah Tryon[1] and was baptized on the 25th of December that year.[2]
He married his first wife Mabel White (but see below) in 1784 in Middletown, but the groom's name that appears in the record is Elihu Tryon.[3]
He married his second wife, Phebe or Phoebe Roberts April 17, 1805 in Middletown.[4]
He died intestate, at the age of 76, in MIddletown on March 26, 1834.[5][6][7] He is buried in Old Farm Hill Cemetery.
Some family trees state that Elisha's first wife was Mabel Boardman White. She died, aged 49, on August 22, 1804, giving a birth year of about 1755.[8] She is buried in Old Farm Hill Cemetery next to her husband. However, the record of the marriage of Mabel White on February 3, 1784 gives the husband's name as Elihu Tryon.[9] Could this be a mis-transcription of Elihu for Elisha? [One document in the file of probate papers for Elisha's estate refers to him as Elihu Tryon.] The third entry further down in the same source (both transcribed and original sources) says: "Elisha, [son Elisha and Martha] b July 7, 1789." This child Elisha would be too young to be the Elisha who married Phoebe Roberts in 1805. Another son, Eleazer, was born to Elisha and Mabel April 7, 1791.[10] A son Leonard was born in Middletown June 27, 1799.[11] A daughter, also named Mabel, was born in Middletown December 26, 1784.[12] A daughter Nancy was born in Middletown December 20, 1786.[13] The youngest son of Elisha and second wife Phebe, Reuben, married a Mercy Boardman.
In the probate papers for Elisha's estate, amongst the debtors appear Enoch Tryon, Leonard Tryon and Elijah Tryon.[14] Though this doesn't prove Leonard was the son of Mabel, his name is unusual enough to suggest that the Leonard who lent Elisha money was the same person as his youngest son by his first wife. Later the probate was contested by a complaint against Eleazar Tryon claiming that he was a significant creditor [or debtor?] of Elisha's at the time of death but did not declare it so prior to the completion of the probate.
1790: 1m<16 (Elisha Jr.), 2f (Mabel and Nancy)
1800: 2m<10 (Elizur, Leonard), 1m10-15 (Elisha Jr.), 1f10-15 (Nancy), 1f16-25 (Mabel)
1810: 2m<10 (Joseph, Rueben), 3m10-15 (Leonard and 2 unknown), 1f10-15 (unknown), 1f16-25 (Nancy).
1820: 3m10-15 (Joseph, Rueben, unknown), 1m16-25 (Leonard), 1f<10 (Phoebe).
There are clearly some missing people here but the pattern isn't clear, i.e., the extra male in 1820 is not present in 1810 though should, and the 3 extras in 1810 are old enough in 1820 to not live in the household any more.
