Biography

William was the fifth child, fourth son, of Moses Tryon and the third child, third son of Eunice Treat, born April 15, 1787.[1] He was baptized in Wethersfield on 2 Nov 1788 together with siblings Moses, George and James.[2]

There are a number of men named William Tryon in Wethersfield at this period, but a young man of his exact age is mentioned in the Connecticut Church Records of Wethersfield as dying in Charleston, South Carolina on August 16, 1809. Tryon, William, d. Aug.16, 1809, age 23, at Charleston, S. C.'[3]

Research Points

There are three relicts/widows of a William Tryon of Wethersfield mentioned in the Connecticut Church Records of Wethersfield, but all three are far too old to have been a wife of this William. There is also recorded the death of a slave woman, Lettuce, in 1797, but it is very unlikely that as a 10-year-old he would have owned a slave in his own name.

"DIED.—At Charleston, (S. C.) 16th of August last, Mr. William Tryon, a son of Capt. Moses Tryon, of Wethersfield, in the 23d year of his age.—He was a young man of benevolent disposition, industrious habits, and exemplary moral conduct. He had recently completed his education, and had just commenced business, but by the untimely stroke of death, is cut off from the fairest prospects of usefulness, severely lamented by a numerous circle of friends and relations.
