Biography

James was the fourth child, third son, of Moses Tryon and Eunice Treat. He was baptized together with siblings George, Betsey, William and Moses Jr., Nov. 2, 1788 at Wethersfield, Connecticut, the same date their parents, Moses Sr. and Eunice, were admitted to full communion.[1]

On January 8, 1804 he was issued a Seaman's Protection Certificate at New London.[2]. This suggests that, like his father and brother George, he sailed either in the merchant fleet or in the US Navy.

A notice in newspaper dated August 10, 1813 announced the death of James Tryon, son of Capt. Moses Tryon of Wethersfield, died Richmond, Virginia age 28 (date of death not noted).[3] There is an unusually large number of deaths reported in that particular issue, of which at least one gives cause of death as drowning, suggesting that perhaps there had been a shipwreck off Richmond. [Requires further research.]

There is also another death notice here [4]. This one says at Richmond, VA, son of Capt. Moses Tryon of Wethersfield.

As James is not mentioned in the will of Capt. Moses Tryon, I suspect he was dead by 1817, though how and where remains to be seen. As he was a seaman like his father and he began sailing in 1804, it is possible that he was lost at sea or killed during the French and Indian War.
