Moses was born 8 Apr 1780 in Wethersfield, Connecticut, the son of Moses Tryon and Mercy Turner [1]. His mother died a few weeks after his birth.
Moses was baptized together with siblings Betsey, George, James and William in Wetherfield on November 2, 1788, the same day their parents were admitted to full communion in the same church.[2]
A professional soldier, he is listed in 1812 as commander of the First Brigade of the First Division of the Connecticut Militia. Rank: Brigadier General.[3] In a history of the War of 1812 it says: "In addition to Governor Griswold's two independent companies, known as the Foot Guards, Connecticut’s militia force is composed four divisions as follows: the 1st Dvision (1st and 7th Brigades) commanded by Major General Solomon Cowles. Cowles’ 1st Brigade is composed of the 1st, 18th, 19th and 22nd Connecticut Infantry Regiments, along with the Connecticut 1st Cavalry Regiment under the command of Brigadier General Moses Tryon Jr."[4]
Moses Jr. was one of the founders of the Connecticut Asylum for the Education of Deaf and Dumb Persons, in a law passed by the Connecticut Legislature in May of 1816.[5]
