Biography

William Tubb is the first Tubb ancestor that can be established with recorded evidence. He was probably born in North Carolina about 1729.

  • His parents cannot be proved. They are unknown. Modern internet trees suggest they may be John Tubb and Rebecca Capshaw. John (a very common name) is the given name assigned by tradition.

William married Elizabeth ________ (c 1730-c1800/1819) probably in North Carolina, about 1752; and probably died in Greenville, South Carolina, between 1800 and 1810.[1][2]

  • Unsourced trees suggest William's wife may be Elizabeth Tabor d/o William or [Tabor-1844|Elizabeth Mary Tabor] d/o John, but no records confirm this information.
Their children were born in Orange County, North Carolina, before the Revolution. Note that the birth order may not be correct. They moved to Tryon County (now Rutherford) shortly before the Revolution. In 1790, they were in Greenville, South Carolina, where they lived near the present Traveler's Rest.[1]

1776 Project
William Tubb performed Patriotic Service in the American Revolution.
Patriot- William Tubb rendered material aid to the cause of American independence, North Carolina.[3][4]Note the DAR uses Tubbs, but the voucher spells his name Tubb.

1777, March 1: William Tubb bought 240 Acres from David Thompson in Tyron Co., North Carolina.[5]

William Tubbs owned 170 acres on the Long Branch of the Teger River.[6] James had 404 acres on the Saluda River.

1799-1804. The Tubb family, James and his father William, his brothers and his in-laws, the Fishers, were members of the Head of the Enoree Baptist Church in Greenville, South Carolina.[7][8] William was excluded from the church in February 1800 for his sin, not named in the record.[8]

William Tubb Death 1804

The minutes of the Reedy River Church (aka Head of the Enoree Church) contained the notice of William's death. "Church Met Saturday before the 1st Sunday in December 1804 ... William Tubb Senior: Dead"[8] The first Sunday in December in 1804 was 2 Dec 1804. The death date used by the DAR, 2 Dec 1804, may be incorrect[3] He died in Greenville, South Carolina. and is probably buried near his home at Traveler's Rest. Elizabeth survived William and died after 1819 in Hickman, Tennessee.[3]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

Tubbs-312 and Tubb-563 appear to represent the same person because: Surname should probably be Tubb, not Tubbs

Source for specific birth date 29 Dec 1729? No source is listed. It's on the unsourced Find a grave memorial. But unsupported dates on FindAGrave are not considered reliable dates. If there are no reliable sources for this date it should be changed to about 1729, which is what the DAR uses. Objections?

Tubbs-389 and Tubbs-312 appear to represent the same person because: These profiles are definitely meant to be the same person. The problem is the two different sets of parents. John and Rebecca are speculative conglomerations of different records, none of them can be linked to the parents of George and William. When the merge is done the parents should be Unknown "John" Tubb (Tubbs-311) and Unknown/Mary Unknown (Unknown-224706)

Matches of 5th cousins and 7th cousins can't be used for DNA confirmation. See these instructions: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:DNA_Confirmation

I've changed the relationships to 'confident'.

The statement that Tubbs was used as LNAB after 1820 is not accurate. My line of Tubb's, as well as those that moved to Union Parish, LA were Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana Tubb(s) were still spelled Tubb.

For instance John Tubb, the RWS, and my ancestor homesteaded land in Perry County, Ala in the 1930's as John Tubb. His granddaughter Mary (Polly Tubb) is my 3rd great grandmother... Tubb not Tubbs

The best way to handle the Tubb/Tubbs LNAB issue is to use one in LNAB and the other as CLN. Census records use Tubb for pre-1800 listings, then after about 1820, I have found Tubbs used for descendants found in Tennessee, Alabama, & Mississippi.

Tubbs-389 and Tubb-60 appear to represent the same person because: Tubb was used as LNAB on Census Records and Land Deeds for this person

Tubbs-389 and Tubb-60 are not ready to be merged because: Tubb should be the last name for the family pre-1800. After 1820ish the Census Records usually (not always) list Tubbs/Tubs as LNAB

AS stated for his father, John, his LNAB should be changed to Tubb
