Biography

Sarah Tufts was born at Newbury, 21 Apr 1725, the daughter of The Rev. John Tufts and Sarah Bradstreet; [1] [2] [3] died at Kittery, Maine, 23 Oct 1799, [4] and was buried with her husband in the Chase Lot (Town of York Cemetery No. 56). [5] She was a descendant of Gov. Simon Bradstreet. [6] She married at Newbury, 5 Apr 1743, The Rev. Josiah Chase, [7] [8] born at Newbury, Massachusetts, 30 Nov 1713, the son of Dea. Thomas Chase and Sarah Stevens; [9] [10] [11] [12] drowned by missing his path and falling into Spruce Creek during a violent snow storm on his way home from attending a wedding, 26 Dec 1778; [13] [14] [15] and is buried in the Chase Lot; [16]

Biographical sketch of The Rev. Josiah Chase from Piscataqua Pioneers:[17]

[The Rev. Josiah Chase] was the first ordained minister of the Middle Parish of Old Kittery, and was installed, 9 September 1750. He was graduated from Harvard College in 1738. He followed teaching for several years, and during the time he studied for the ministry, and preached as occasion opened for him to try his gifts in ministerial work, but he was not regularly admitted to the ministry until he came to Kittery; he remained there as minister for nearly forty years, an able, faithful and devout pastor and useful citizen of the town. He met with an untimely death, 26 December 1778, as he was on his way home from a wedding in the parish. During the wedding ceremonies, a blinding snow storm set in; the host urged him to stay the night, but he thought it better for him to go home. On the journey, he lost his way and fell into a creek, when near his home, and was drowned. His body was recovered the next day, or soon after, and the parish was in great distress over the loss of their beloved pastor.
