DEATH OF MRS. NEWMAN. At the comparatively early age of 57, and at the time when most people look forward to enjoying the fruits of their years of toil (says the "Catho- lic Advocate"), there passed to her eternal reward, on August 4th, after a fortnight's illness in the Ipswich Hospital, a lady whose solid Christian piety, large and unostentatious charity and amiable and unaffected manner and disposition, won for her the re-spect and esteem of a wide circle of friends and acquaintances—Elizabeth, the beloved wife of Mr. John Newman and sister of the late Mr. Patrick Tuite, of Biarra, famous in pastoral and racing circles who predeceased her four years ago. Married in her native town of Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland, in 1881, to her schoolmate, she arrived with him from the ship "Glamis" in Queensland to- wards the end of that year, and soon made the first of her two homes in this country at Fairney View, on the Brisbane Valley Railway, where her husband easily secured employment inthe maintenance department of that branch. From this she transferred with him to Coominya, where, during the past twenty-five years she helped her husband to acquire that independence that has made "Navan Ville" one of the best known centres of hospitality and conviviality in the district, and where she reared a most respectable family of six sons and six daughters. One of the sons, Edward, made the supreme sacrifice during the great war. A daughter , Brigid, died in childhood. Besides her husband, there now re-main to [unclear] their irreparable loss her sons, Thomas, John, James, Pat-rick, and her daughters, Mrs. James Gannon and Mrs. Michael Moran, all of whom reside in the Kingaroy dis- trict. Another daughter, Mrs Patrick Conroy, is comfortably settled at Deep Creek, and Michael, Annie, and Jane still reside with their father at Coominya. Mrs Newman's death, like that of many another heroic mother of recent years was hastened by fretting at the loss of her soldier son. Her remains were brought from Ipswich on the 4th August to her home where Mass was celebrated next day, at which many offered their Holy Communion for the repose of her soul, and the very large procession of mourners, which included residents of the entire surrounding district and who followed her to her last earthly resting place in Tarampa's beautiful Catholic Cemetery, abundantly testified that Mrs Newman was one of those people who are greatly missed and whose death makes the community all the poorer. R.I.P.
