Biography

Mark is estimated to have been born in 1668. His birth place was likely in Rappahannock County, Virginia. He was one of the younger sons of James Toone and wife Ann, who are proven by primary sources to have both been married prior. Mark was named in the will of his father dated 26 August 1676 in Rappahannock County, Virginia.[1]

He was again named in a Rappahannock County "Deed of Gift" from his widowed mother Anne Toone dated 26 May 1677, which indicated all of her children, including two sons from her first marriage, were minors. This deed also included Mark's half-brother, James Toone, issue from his father's first marriage.[2]

Mark was specifically named as a son of James Toone, deceased, in the will of his step-father, Dominick Rice, dated 28 October 1683 in Rappahannock County.[3] The will of his mother Anne Rice dated 8 February 1684/5 in Rappahannock County again indicated Mark was yet a minor. She appointed his elder half-brother Thomas Dew as his guardian, and in the event of Thomas' death, his next eldest half-brother Andrew Dew. Mark's full sibling William Toone was then appointed to become his guardian when William came of age.[4] He was again named in the will of his half-brother Andrew Toone dated 16 October 1711 in Richmond County, Virginia.

Mark married prior to 1710 to Elizabeth Lewis. The birth's of two of their children were recorded in the North Farnham Parish Register in Richmond County, Virginia.

Ann Tune, b. 18 May 1710
Elizabeth Tune, b. 10 April 1712

His will was dated 21 September 1717 in Richmond County and was proved 4 June 1718.[5] He named sons; John, Lewis, William, Mark, Thomas and James Tune, and two daughters; Ann and Elizabeth Tune.

He died in (old) Rappahanock Richmond County, Virginia, on 21 September 1717 or before June 4, 1718.[6] (Note: Old Rappahannock County ceased to exist in 1692 when divided into Richmond & Essex counties.)

Toney-25 and Tune-21 appear to represent the same person because: These profiles represent the same Mark Tune of Old Rappahannock, later Richmond County, Virginia. His father James Tune was granted land in Rappahannock County a good bit prior to his birth so he was surely born there. As there are no primary sources to support a New Kent County birth location, or the parentage attached to Toney-25, please merge into the LNAB Tune. Thanks, Honi

It seems unlikely James Toone's son Mark would have been born in New Kent. Anne's first husband Andrew Dew was a planter of Rappahannock County per a deed made by her third husband Dominick Rice, and James Toone died in Rappahannock County. ALL of the children of James Toone, including his eldest James, were minors when his widow Anne made a Deed of Gift to them in 1677. All found documentation appears to list the sons in birth order, indicating Mark was one of his youngest two sons.

Tune-45 and Tune-21 appear to represent the same person because: while dates and places are not the same, it is the same wife and there are no sources to defend either set of data
