Research Notes

I found this to be interesting, I have not read the article beyond the part I copied and paste, I will do that tomorrow. "About 1717, Derrick married Mary, who may have been a member of the Van Kirk family of Flatbush. In 1721, they moved from Raritan, N.J. to an area along the Millstone River in Somerset Co., N.J. On March 2, 1741, he purchased 278 acres at Amwell, N.J., which he eventually deeded to two of his sons, William and Jacobus (James).

In Amwell, Derrick ran a public house. Family tradition claims that there were always "at least two generations of Hooglands under its roof and that from its doors none ever went away hungry." Derrick was the first to be appointed elder of the Amwell Presbyterian Church. He died sometime between August 21, 1765 – the date of his will – and October 5, 1765, when it was probated. Mary died in 1793.

Derrick and Mary had the following children:

John, baptized 5 Apr 1719, New Brunswick, N.J., in the Dutch Reformed Church William, baptized 9 Oct 1720, New Brunswick, N.J., in the Dutch Reformed Church; m. Rachel ______; d. in late 1799 or early 1800 Jacobus (James), baptized 7 Dec 1722, New Brunswick, N.J., in the Dutch Reformed Church; m. ca. 1746 Mary Newman; d. 1770 Derrick, baptized 28 Jan 1725, New Brunswick, N.J., in the Dutch Reformed Church; married Abigail Howell; d. 1763 Hendrick, b. 13 May 1726 near Millstone, N.J.; m. 2 Apr 1749, Leah Sutphen; d. before 1765 George, b. ca 1729; m. Mrs Margaret Probasco; d. ca. 1791 Abraham, b. ca. 1731 Joseph Caderus, b. 11 Dec 1737 Daniel, b. 1738 Amos, b. 21 Aug 1741 Sarah m. Denys Tunison Mary m. _________ Quick Siche or Fytje, m. 1st, Mr Van Vliet; 2nd, Joseph Leigh" Link to the article.

I do not know if this is your Denys Tunison, but will continue tomorrow. JWW.

That Sarah who married Denys Tunison was apparently born after 1741, so she was a different generation than the man born in 1708, as described in this profile. - Smith-62120 12:48, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

Tunison-41 and Tunison-19 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents, same dates (with minor variance), same spouse. Same person.

Please merge!

Death date of 1790 likely in error. The petition of the Raritan Valley land owners to NJ Assembly for reparations following Washington's army encampment was signed by Sary Tunison and Cornelius Tunison and submitted in March 1778. Had Denys been alive then, he - not his wife - would have signed the petition. Thus, the death date of 1790 in error, so an estimated date of death for Denys is no later than 1777 . Sary (Sarah)'s will is dated in 1790.

Update to previous message. Sarah Hoogland b. 1709 is the daughter of Joris (George) who descends from Cornelis Diercksen Hoochlandt per Hoogland Family in America. Another Sarah, daughter of Johannis (John) was bap. 1708 and it states she married Jacob Janeway. Neither of these Sarah's should be connected as a wife of Denys Tunison.

After reading Hoogland Family in America, pub. 1891 by Dr. Cornelius N. Hoogland, this biography matches the family in Chapter IV naming the children in Derrick's will. No dates of baptism listed for 3 daughters, possibly Sarah was first child b. 1717-1718 as she married in 1735.

Denyse was listed as youngest son of Cornelis & Neeltje (Bogart) in 1731 will.

Baptism record: 4-28-1708 Thuenissen, Cornelis and wife--Dneyes(?). Witnesses: Tuenis and Saertjen Middelswart

Baptism record transcribed from Dutch Reformed Church Record/Raritan. Witness Tuenis was son of Jan, brother of Cornelis. This would be the spouse of Sara Hoogland, daughter of Derrick and Mary Van Kirk according to all research records reviewed. Denyse Tunison did not sign the petition for damages/losses from Washington's army encampment 1776-7 in Middlebrook area, however, Cornelius Tunison and Sary Tunison signed, so likely that Denyse was deceased before 1778 when petition went to the New Jersey assembly.
