Biography

Martha was born on 30 May 1741 and baptized on 13 June 1742 in Prince Frederick Parish, South Carolina. [1] She passed away about 1871.

Mourning Turbeville "Morning", was married to Jesse Bryant Sr., according to family trees on MyHeritage and Ancestry.com [1; 2]. However, she seems to also be known as Martha Obedience Turbeville; who was married to Jesse Bryant, Sr., when she was about 19-20 years old, in South Carolina, [according to M. Steve Todd's family tree][3]. The Turbeville family seems to have come to Colonial America from England, in about 1735; according to Bishop Gregg [4; 5]. Jesse Bryant, Sr., is reported to be the first of this specific Bryant family, to have come to America, from England {according to Bishop Gregg}[4; 5].

She was the mother of at least 11 children: Martha Obedience, Smithy, Milly, Citsy, Mourning, Sally, Mary, Jesse, James, William, and Elizabeth. [1; 2].

She was the sister of Reverend William Turbeville. [4; 5]. This is found in the History of Marion County (5). According to some Family Trees on Ancestry.com, she was the daughter of John Turbeville and Elizabeth Johns. (My (Talmia Burr), DNA links on Ancestry.com, APPEAR and SEEM to connect with descendants of Charles Turbeville, son of John and Elizabeth). However, according to other research, she is the daughter of William Turbeville, Sr. (I am unsure of which is correct - T.B.)

Mourning and Jesse lived in Marion County, South Carolina. [1; 2; 3; 5]. According to M. Steve Todd's family tree, they died in South Carolina. As stated, more research is needed to confirm information about Jesse and Mourning/Martha Obedience.

It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Martha by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Martha:

So Martha Obedience was 130 years old?

"Martha was born on 30 May 1741 and baptized on 13 June 1742 in Prince Frederick Parish, South Carolina. [1] Martha Turbeville ... She passed away about 1871. [2]"

We know Turbevilles/Turbervilles were in New England in the early 1600's . Bishop Gregg nor W.W. Sellers should not be used as source documentation, Sellers had the Rev. Turbeville living to 110, all the researchers I have read think Sellers combined two William Turbevilles.

My Y700 FTDNA test is public if it will help any, I would love to have more answers on Turberville, Turbeville, Turbyfill, Turvaville and many other spellings.

Turbeville-171 and Turbeville-139 appear to represent the same person because: This is the same person with the same spouse and children.
