Newberry died of an illness at Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, during the Civil War, he served as a Private in Co. E, 13th Ala Infantry.

One of twins, served in Co. E. 13th Ala. Inf.. and died of illness at Richmond, VA on July 13 1862.

Newberry Turner Private, Co. E, 13th Ala Inf. Enlisted Sept. 12, 1861 with Eastville, AL unit for the duration of the war by Capt. Jonathan Adams Moore. During Jan. and Feb. 1862, he was on roll of sick at a hospital. On May 26th, 1862 he was on the roll of the Chimborazo Hospital #2, Richmond VA. He had Rheumatism. On June 18, 1862 he was moved to #1 Hospital with Diarrhea. He was transferred to (H ngt) Springs on June 22, 1862 where he died in the hospital on July 13, 1862.

Martha Ann Turner, wife, filed a claim for settlement of pay due in the office of the Confederate States Auditor for the War Department on March 4, 1863. Amount found to be due was $107.76. He also had not been paid his $50. bounty for enlisting.

A man named Jefferson Miller made affidavit with Martha in Randolph County, AL Probate Judge's office, on April 9, 1863. Martha also filed for a widow pension application on May 20th, 1887 in Cleburne Co., AL and again on July 29th, 1889 in Calhoun Co., AL.

Note: Newberry and brother David, served in the same unit. His brothers Littleberry and Simonberry joined the 44th on May 6, 1862 at Fairplay, AL. Newberry and Littleberry were twins according to the 1850 census and were born c. 1831.

The 13th AL Inf Regt was organized in July 1861 at Montgomery, AL. Men of this unit were from many counties including Randolph. The unit was ordered to Virginia and at one time was a part of W. H. Forney's Brigade (Native of Jacksonville, AL), Army of Northern Virginia.

When the 1860 Calhoun County AL Census was taken a 19 year old man, Levi Williams, and a 24 year old woman, Francis Williams, were living in his household. They are presumed to be his wife's brother and sister. 3

Newberry Turner served in the 13th Alabama Regiment, Company E, Private, Film Number M374 roll 45.
