Biography

Jane was born about 1792 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. She was the daughter of Henry Turner and Tamar Hayden (alt Headen). Susan Christie states that Jane was the daughter of James Turner and Margaret Hayden.^[1] The Cantrill-Cantrell Genealogy: research indicates that Jane was actually the daughter of Henry Turner, James Turner's brother (see information from Henry's will below). Both Henry and James married a Hayden wife and this could be where the confusion came in.^[2]

Jane is named as "Jane Cantrell" in the will of her father Henry Turner dated 26 June 1832 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Her inheritance included:

• one bed and furniture at $10
• one cow at $10
• also one Negroe girl by the name of Nancy at $200
• one cow and calf at $10 also $40 in money
• one wagon at $50 Spartanburg County, ^[3]

Marriage

Jane married William Cantrell about 1811 in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.

It appears that Jane and William separated sometime before 1860. They are together on the 1850 census in Marion County, Alabama, however they are living in separate households on the 1860 and 1870 census. She is living alone in 1860.^[4] In 1870 she is living with Mary A Cantrell, age 21 and born in Alabama. From her age and birth place she appears to be a granddaughter.^[5]

Elizabeth was born in 1792. She passed away in 1881.
