Marriage Announcement

Turner – Beardsley
On October 9, 1900, the interior of the West Baptist Church, Oswego, NY, became a veritable botanical garden. Across it’s front was a mammoth arch of various colored geraniums, beautiful asters, white phlox, and anemones, with a background of fir twigs and pine needles. Sprays of the wax berry formed a large wedding bell suspended from its center. Above the middle aisle entrance at the rear was a small arch of maple and oak leaves. The organ and choir station were tastily decorated with cut flowers. The platform was a beautiful garden of handsome foliage plants and cut flowers. The baptistery was a perfect sylvan bower of palms oak and maple branches.
The occasion was the marriage of Dr. Raymond Comstock Turner (’'99) and Miss Grace Eliza Beardsley, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anson F. Beardsley of Oswego, NY. The function was one of the most elaborate select and ornate in the history of the church. For half an hour before the ceremony, organ selections of classical music were rendered. At 7:30 pm, the bridal party entered to the strains of Lohengrin's Bridal March. The ceremony was performed by Rev. C.S. Savage, the pastor assisted by Rev. S.W. Brown, pastor of the First Methodist Church. During the ceremony, the organ rendered softly De Koven's O’ Promise Me, and when retiring, Mendelssohn's Wedding March.
The maid of honor was Miss Emma E. Devendorf, the bridesmaid Miss Jessie E. Cogswell, the best man Dr. Ira Jerome Coe (’'99) of Baldwinsville NY, and Clyde A. Rowlingson, master of ceremonies. A reception was held after the ceremony at the home of the bride's parents after which the happy pair left on an extended bridal tour. Both are popular and well known in Oswego as many beautiful bridal gifts testify.[The Stomatoligist]
