Biography

The TURNER family

Jane was a Friend (Quaker)
Jane (Turner) Waln was a William Penn fleet passenger.

The name Turner was quite common in the parish of Slaidburn during this time, making it more difficult to trace the name. The ancestors of Nicholas Waln's wife Jane Turner came from the village of Windyates, not far from Newton, in the Forest of Bolland. The earliest known mention of the Turners of Windyates occurs in the will of William Standen of Newton in Bolland, Yorkshire, written 21 Jan 1583/4, and proved 12 Aug 1584 [Will in York Registry, vol. 22, p. 562, FHL film #99479]. Among the legatees mentioned were John Turner, son of Robert Turner, late of Windyates, and Robert Turner, son of William Turner of Windyates. How these men were connected to the Standen family is unknown. Robert Turner of Windyates in Bolland, Yorkshire, husbandman, probably the above son of William Turner, wrote his will on 31 December 1620, proved 26 Oct 1621 [Will in York Registry, vol. 36, p. 561, FHL film #99505]. Mentioned were his sons John, James, and Thomas Turner, and wife Elizabeth Turner, executrix, who was to care for and educate his children. The continuous lineage begins with Elizabeth Turner of Windyates, a widow whose husband's name is unknown. It is possible, though unlikely, that her husband was the above Robert Turner who died in 1620/1, and did have a wife named Elizabeth. However, the rest of the information in the two wills does not fit very well, and it is more likely that Elizabeth's husband was some relative of this Robert Turner.

First Generation: Elizabeth Turner of Windyates, Yorkshire, will written 12 Feb 1641/2, proved Feb 1645/6 [Original Will, Exchequer Court of the Archbishop of York, FHL film #99542]. Her maiden name, and the name of her husband, are unknown. Her will mentiones her daughter Margret, deceased son Thomas, Marget's husband Robert, son of Robert Parker of Foulscales, her grandchildren Richard, Elizabeth, and William Hairst. Also mentioned were John Hairst of Slainmerow, father of William, and her son William, executor, who received all lands in Slainmerow.
