Biography

This biography is a rough draft. It was auto-generated by a GEDCOM import and needs to be edited.

Research of Dr. Joel S. Watkins, Jr. (1932-2016), added by his nephew, Justin Watkins:

"Samuel Turner appears frequently in Spartanburg Co. records although, except for deeds of land on Lawson's Fork, it is difficult to separate him from Samuel, son of George Turner, who was a Justice of the Peace. Samuel Turner received 70a from his father Henry Turner on Lawson's Fork in 1792. In 1804, he received 30a jointly from his father, Henry, and neighbor Henry Chiles. Samuel Turner's wife, Nancy, renounced her dower rights when this parcel was sold in 1816. Samuel Turner also bought 100a from his uncle William Turner in 1801.

"Samuel Turner and wife, Nancy Chiles, had 4 sons under 10 years of age and no daughters in the 1800 census. In 1810, Samuel and Nancy Turner have 3 sons and 1 daughter under 10 and 4 sons and 1 daughter between 10 and 16 years. Old Samuel Turner seems to have died intestate, but sons Lewis, William, Henry, Barney, James, and Samuel, Jr. are indicated as sons by deeds and census records. John and Darby Turner are also candidates, but they come into the picture later, and seem more likely to be grandsons. I do not know the names of Samuel Turner's daughters, but neither have I carefully searched the Jefferson Co., AL, records for daughters.

"Samuel Turner sold most of his land in Spartanburg Co. in 1816. His whereabouts between 1816 and 1822 are not clear. There is a Samuel Turner in 1820 of about the right age and living in the vicinity of Darby Turner, who appears to have a son/daughter and family living with him and his wife. Samuel Turner doesn't appear in the Jefferson Co., AL, deed records until 1824, when he buys 320a in T15, R1. Son Samuel M. Turner, however, bought a lot in Elyton, Jefferson Co., AL, in 1822. Samuel Turner does not appear to be in the 1820 AL Census.

"After his arrival in Jefferson Co., AL, Samuel Turner and his wife, Nancy, appear frequently in the deed records. In a number of instances they are buying land from their children or selling them land. Samuel and Nancy Turner lived to ripe old ages. They appear in the 1850 census, both aged about 84. Samuel Turner died at about age 88 in 1854. This was about the time of the big migration of Turners from AL to MS.

"John Turner was appointed administrator for the estate of Samuel Turner, dec'd, 29 Jan 1855 - Jefferson Co., AL, Deed Book 11, p. 575."

See Birmingham (AL) State Herald, 30 June 1896 for complete birth and death dates for Samuel and Nancy Turner.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:
