Freelove at age 15, he immigrated with parents to Iowa, first settling at St Marys, then Plattsmouth.
On 20 Nov 1858, Freelove married Elizabeth Ellen Gowens. Eight children were born of this marriage.
At the start of the Civil War, Freelove moved his family to Nebraska Territory where he joined the Nebraska Volunteers, 2nd Calvary. Freelove served as a Private from Nov 1862 to Dec 1863. Freelove then moved to Oak twp, Mills County, Iowa where he raised his family.
In 1880, a typhoid outbreak took his wife Elizabeth and 12 year old son George. Freelove remarried to widow of Elizabeth's brother, Mary Gowens in 1881. Five children were born of this marriage, Minerva, John Earl, Benjamin Franklin, Luther Daniel, and Clarence Curtis. Freelove outlived his second wife, and lived with his son in Council Bluffs in his remaining years.
